Georgia women move up leaderboard in New Orleans
Even though the Georgia women’s golf team continued to struggle Saturday in the windy conditions, it was still able to move up in the standings.
In the second round of the Tiger/Wave Classic at English Turn Golf and Country Club, the No. 17 Georgia carded in a 25-over-par 313 on Saturday, yet still managed to move up six spots to 8th place overall, but are still 19 strokes off the leader.
“It was real windy, I am guessing it was about a 20-30 mile per hour steady wind today and the scores indicate that” said Georgia head coach Kelley Hester. “But you gotta be really tough mentally. You don’t let the elements get to you. You just have to hit the ball where it ends up.”
That sentiment was never truer then with Georgia’s individual leader on Friday, sophomore, Marta Silva Zamora, who scored a 6-over on the par 5, 15th hole on Saturday. She ended the day with an 11-over 83 second round score, a season worse. But she was able to bounce back the rest of the round as she went on to score 1-over on her last 12 holes. This moved her from a tie for 16th to a tie for 49th.
Freshmen, Emily Burger, had the biggest turn around for the team as she finished the second round with a 75 moving her up to a tie for 40th, up 51 places from Friday.
Senior, Carolina Andrade, finished the round in a tie for 34th after shooting a 76; sophomore, Milena Savich, ended still tied for 34th with a 79 and freshmen, Kendall Wright, finished the day tied for 76th with an 83.
The team leaderboard sees No. 20 LSU and No. 2 Auburn tied for first at 25-over 601; No. 27 TCU is in 3rd and two-shots behind the leader at 27-over 603. The No. 7 University of Alabama is in fourth with a 31-over 607 and No. 18 Virginia rounds out the top-5 with a 35-over 611.
Georgia will finish with their last round Sunday in the three-day event.
