Dogs post home win over Arkansas, senior shakes off Friday loss

Call him the comeback kid.

Senior Nate Schnugg earned a three-set win in Sunday’s dual match against Arkansas to bounce back after a loss to Southern Cal two days before.

After losing a hard-fought singles match and team match against USC  Friday, senior captain Nate Schnugg found his stride Sunday against Arkansas.

The No. 6 Bulldogs rebounded from Friday’s 4-2 loss against the defending national champion Southern Cal with a 6-0 shutout of the Razorbacks, maintaining their perfect record against SEC teams this season.

“We had a great practice and some really good talks the last couple of days, after the SC match. We turned it into a big positive for us. I think everybody has got a lot more focus and showed tremendous determination today against a very good Arkansas team,” head coach Manuel Diaz said.

Schnugg’s loss in singles play Friday marked the Bulldogs’ fourth loss in singles to the No. 3 Trojans. That prompted Schnugg’s opponent, Robert Farah, to yell at Schnugg and the crowd after his victory. Boos echoed inside the Dan Magill Tennis Complex and profanities were shouted, leaving Schnugg baffled.

“I felt like the way my opponent handled the match was pretty classless. I didn’t agree with a lot of the things that he did. But that’s tennis,” Schnugg said.

The next day, the Bulldogs held an afternoon meeting and practice to regroup.

“A lot of that stress from Friday was still hanging on me … I was still angry about [Friday’s loss], so mentally I was a little frazzled out there [during the Arkansas match],” Schnugg said.

Schnugg collected himself during his third set tiebreaker and won 3-6, 6-1, 7-6 (8-6) against No. 49 Christopher Nott.

Though the match — held inside due to rain — had already been clinched by freshman Bo Seal on court four, Schnugg felt personal vindication in his victory.

“I feel like I’m starting to play a lot better and I’m gaining confidence,” Schnugg said. “This was just a confidence booster for me and for the whole team. Winning 6-0 is not easy and we did that today and I’m proud of everybody.”
