The Week: April 1-7
The Red & Black’s event guide to happenings — news, variety and sports — in and around Athens from April 1-April 7.
PICK OF THE WEEK:
Week of Soul
Chrisette Michele is rising to the top of the R&B charts just as fast as Alicia Keys did almost 10 years ago, and her vocals can hit the same keys as Keys, too.
This New York diva is coming to Athens to showcase her talent in rhythm and blues, jazz and soul. Critics have compared her singing style to the likes of Macy Gray and Ella Fitzgerald, and last year Michele proved she could live up to her influences when she won a Grammy Award for Best Urban/Alternative Performance for her song “Be OK.”
Michele has worked with such artists as Jay-Z, Kanye West and The Roots in her impressive three-year career. In 2008, she wrote a song featured in Tyler Perry’s “House of Payne,” and it all started in high school when she led her church’s gospel choir.
