Adult Swim hits downtown tonight

By on April 6, 2010

You’ve no doubt seen it on every college stoner’s TV set late at night, but have you ever seen it in a parking lot in downtown Athens?

Yes, Cartoon Network’s legendary Adult Swim is in the middle of its block party tour around the United States — and the Classic City is its destination tonight.

More specifically, Adult Swim and company will be setting up camp in the parking lot right next to the 40 Watt Club in downtown Athens. Among the festivities the event will offer include carnival games galore, a video gaming area, raffles for video games from Capcom and phones from T-Mobile, creating custom T-shirts, and much more — all tied together by themes related to popular Adult Swim shows.

Perhaps best of all, though, the block party will feature free music, including performances by Brooklyn experimental rock band Here We Go Magic as well as Athens’ own pop-rock darlings The Modern Skirts.

“From what I know, they [Adult Swim] seem like really interesting people,” said Peter Hale, Here We Go Magic’s drummer. “To make shows like that, you have to be interesting. I don’t think any of us in our band own a TV, but I love ‘Aqua Teen Hunger Force,’ and they seem to have a knack for the absurd, which we can really relate to.”

Despite having only one album under its belt, Here We Go Magic has already been exposed to a wide audience via its tour last summer with Grizzly Bear. The brainchild of singer/multi-instrumentalist/songwriter Luke Temple, Here We Go Magic started as a one-man band and, over time, amassed four other members in a sort of snowball effect. Hale joined up with Temple first, followed by guitarist Michael Bloth and keyboardist Kristina Lieberson.

Now, one year later, Here We Go Magic has wrapped up their second album, “Pigeon” — the first album to feature the current incarnation of the group.

“We try to make music like we’re the first people to ever make music, to some degree,” Hale said.

The Modern Skirts, though hardly a stranger to Athens, is taking advantage of the Adult Swim block party in its own way: the band plans to deliver a set of completely unreleased material, pulled from its forthcoming third studio album.

“Our new music is completely different in so many ways,” said Phillip Brantley, guitarist/bassist/vocalist for the Skirts, who has been watching Adult Swim since it debuted on Cartoon Network. “It’s more stripped down, and it incorporates more synthetic beats. It’s very rhythmic in a way our other stuff hasn’t been.”

Although the quartet is known for musical collaboration, Brantley stated things will be slightly different this time around.

“Most of the new stuff is coming from our lead singer Jay [Gulley],” Brantley said. “He has this collection of analog keyboards, mostly from the ’80s, and he just finds these beats and has been writing some really great, interesting stuff that he never thought would become part of our catalog.”
