Henley selected for Southern Golf Association award
Georgia’s Russell Henley has been chosen as the National Amateur of the Month for April by the Southern Golf Association.
Henley will be presented the award during a pregame ceremony at the Georgia-Tennessee baseball game on Friday.
The junior from Macon is the nation’s top-ranked golfer according to the Golfweek/Sagarin Performance Index. Last month, he validated his ranking by winning medalist honors at the SEC Championship and leading the Bulldogs to the program’s 28th conference title.
Following the meet, Henley was chosen as the SEC Golfer of the Year by the league coaches. Henley has won three tournaments this season and has won five times in his career – two shy of the school record.
Last week, Henley received a sponsor’s exemption for the Nationwide Tour’s Stadion Athens Classic at the UGA Golf Course and came in 34th, including a final-round 4-under 67.
Henley is one of the 10 semifinalists for the Ben Hogan Award, which is presented to the nation’s top golfer. This summer, Henley will represent the United States in the Palmer Cup in Northern Ireland.
The SGA is active in the promotion of amateur golf, including its Southern Amateur Championship, the 104th playing set for Shoal Creek Country Club near Birmingham, Ala., in July. The winner will earn a sponsor’s exemption to compete in the PGA Tour’s Arnold Palmer Invitational in Orlando, Fla., next March.
