Georgia has been selected as one of 16 regional host sites for the 2010 NCAA Division I Softball Championships, the NCAA announced on Sunday.

The 2010 NCAA Athens Regional at the UGA Softball Stadium will feature host Georgia (43-11) from the Southeastern Conference, Florida State (43-16) from the Atlantic Coast Conference, Big South Champion Radford (36-15) and Southern Conference Champion Elon (38-19).

In addition to earning the top seed for the Athens Regional, Georgia is also the sixth-overall national seed. The regional round of play features a four-team double elimination bracket, and the Bulldogs opening round contest will come against Elon Friday at 7:30 p.m. ET. Florida State and Radford will play in the opening game of the Athens Regional Friday at 5 p.m.

Georgia is making its ninth-consecutive and ninth overall NCAA postseason appearance in school history, all under head coach Lu Harris-Champer. The Bulldogs are 29-16 overall in NCAA postseason play, and advanced to the Women’s College World Series for the first time in school history last season.

A total of 64 teams were selected to the NCAA Tournament with 30 conferences being awarded automatic qualification, while the remaining 34 slots were filled with at-large selections to complete the bracket. The top 16 teams were seeded nationally with Georgia earning the sixth national seed. The SEC had a total of seven teams selected for the tournament, with five of those teams earning one of the 16 national seeds. Each of the 16 Regional winners will advance to the Super Regional round of play May 28-30. In Super Regionals, eight sites play host to a best-of-three game series with the winners earning one of eight spots in the 27th NCAA Division I Women’s College World Series in Oklahoma City June 3-9.
