Police report: UGA’s Jackson admits drinking downtown, hitting car; third football player in car (w/report)
Georgia football player Dontavius Jackson admitted to drinking two shots downtown and “appeared to not be trying to provide a sufficient sample” for the Breathalyzer following his arrest and charge with DUI Saturday morning, according to a University Police report.
The report also reveals another football player was in the car. Sophomore cornerback Branden Smith was determined to not have been drinking but was served with a license suspension notice at the scene. Also taken into evidence was an identification card belonging to sophomore cornerback Vance Cuff. Redshirt sophomore wide receiver Tavarres King was also in the car with Jackson and charged with underage possession of alcohol.
On Sunday, Georgia football coach Mark Richt said Jackson and King were suspended indefinitely from the team, and that Jackson will serve a minimum six-game suspension while King will serve a minimum one-game suspension for the upcoming season.
“I’m disappointed in their decision-making and lack of judgment and they will both pay a stiff price,” said Richt. “All our players need to understand that it’s a privilege to be a Bulldog and their conduct needs to reflect the standards we expect.”
UGA officer Jeffrey Cooper pulled Jackson over at 2:24 a.m. after the Chevrolet Avalanche he was driving did not slow down past an unrelated stop on East Campus Road. The Avalanche turned onto College Station Road and made a left on Agriculture Drive before attempting to turn back on East Campus Road, the report states. The officer was finally able to stop the car, noted a strong order of an alcoholic beverage coming from it and noticed Jackson’s eyes were glassy and bloodshot. Jackson said he was coming from downtown and did not know he needed to slow down when passing other cars pulled over by law enforcement.
Jackson initially told the officer he did not drink any alcohol and said he was aware he wasn’t supposed to be driving with a Class D license at that time of night.
Jackson consented to a field sobriety test and stated a left knee injury affected his balance. According to the report, Jackson displayed a lack of smooth eye pursuit, could not hold a starting position and stepped off the line on the walk and turn and continuously swayed during the one leg stand.
While conducing the field test, a report over the radio advised the a white Chevrolet Avalanche had struck another vehicle on East Campus Road.
“I asked Jackson if he had any information that he wished to tell me. He stated that he did not. I asked him a second time if anything had happened prior to him passing my patrol car and he stated that he had rear ended another vehicle and that he and the driver of that vehicle had settled on scene,” the report states.
An ID of all the passengers in the car revealed they were all under the age of 21, and three passengers – King, University student Marygrace Azar and Bibb County High School’s Darren Whatley – were arrested and charged with underage possession of alcohol. The car was registered to King.
Jackson was charged with DUI under the age of 21, Move Over Law violation, underage possession of alcohol, driving in violation of license class, following too closely and leaving the scene of an accident.
