Touring band plays Classic City
Students willing to go out before summer classes come to an end have at least one place to go for an exciting, entertaining show.
Charlotte, N.C., rockers The New Familiars will be taking the stage July 29 at the Melting Point alongside Savannah band The Trainwrecks.
“All songs are written by the band, except for a few covers,” said Josh Daniel, vocalist, resonator and guitarist.
The band created a unique sound, successfully meshing the genres of folk, Americana, country and rock ’n’ roll.

▲ The New Familiars hopes to bring its special brand of folk Americana rock back to the Classic City for the fourth time.
Groups such as the Grateful Dead and R.E.M. serve as major inspirations for the band.
Not only has the Grateful Dead helped stir The New Familiars’ music, but it also gave the group the idea to create an image associated only with the band.
A red rose is placed on much of the band’s equipment, as well as the covers of all its previous CD releases.
“It was just something Justin [Fedor, the band’s vocalist, guitarist and mandolin player] drew — it was just to keep it cohesive,” Daniel said. “You see it and know it’s us.”
The New Familiars have been touring together for the past couple of years, playing nearly every night of the month.
“We did 25 shows in June,” Daniel said. “We are trying to make a living out of it — just out there doing our thing.”
The band released four previous works, but none are complete.
The New Familiars plan to release a full-length album, titled “Between the Moon & Morning Light,” later this year.
Currently independent, the group has hired a management team to find a company to release their album.
“This is just where we are at in our career,” Daniel said. “To get to the next level, you need help.
