Haz-Mat called after radioactive material dropped on campus (w/documents)

By on August 9, 2010

A small vial of radioactive material dropped and broke on the floor at the Coverdell Building on Friday afternoon, but no one was injured and the spill was contained.

Carrie Brooks, a lab coordinator at the Coverdell Building, met with University police on Friday after notifying the Hazardous Awareness Response Team. Wes Kolar of HART arrived at the scene 30 minutes after the spill to clean the area and check for contamination. Kolar advised UGA police the spill was contained and their assistance was no longer needed.

UGA had a chemical spill in September at the Life Sciences Building when a laboratory technician spilled a bottle containing about 200 milliliters of an organic compound called piperidine. The lab tech was unhurt in the incident.
