UGA student says she was raped in Bourbon Street bar bathroom (w/report)
A University student told police she was raped Tuesday morning in the bathroom of Bourbon Street Bar and Grill, located on East Broad Street.
Officers met with the 20-year-old student at Athens Regional Medical Center, according to the Athens-Clarke County police report. The student’s roommate, also a University student, had taken her to the hospital.
According to Capt. Clarence Holeman, commanding officer of the Athens-Clarke police Criminal Investigations Division, the investigation continues, but police are confident they will find the offender.
“We’re following some very good leads, and I think we’ll uncover what happens,” Holeman said. Holeman said alcohol was involved in the incident but would not elaborate further.
This incident is one of nine rapes and one attempted rape reported in the past two months. Holeman said he couldn’t evaluate whether this number is unusual.
“We just investigate them when they come up,” he said. “So I can’t really say if that’s abnormal or not. When people call and say they’ve been raped, we investigate them.”
