Georgia women’s golf schedule released
The Georgia women’s golf team will make some traditional trips and visit some new locales during its 2010-11 schedule, which was announced by head coach Kelley Hester.
“It’s a good schedule,” Hester said. “I feel like it’s very competitive. I don’t know where it will rank nationally, but I think it will be very challenging and I’m pleased with it. Obviously, you want to go to the best tournaments you can, and I think that’s what we’re doing.”
The Bulldogs will visit recent regular stops such as Vanderbilt’s Mason Rudolph Championship, the Lady Puerto Rico Classic and their own Liz Murphey Collegiate Classic. Also mixed into eight regular-season tournaments are first-time trips to the PAC 10-SEC Challenge at Stanford and the Battle at Rancho Bernardo in San Diego.
“We have some different and new tournaments,” Hester said. “The PAC 10-SEC Challenge and the Battle at Rancho Bernardo are new events. We didn’t go out West all year last season. I felt like it might be good to go out there a couple of times. We have a young roster but a group that will be together for a couple of years. These tournaments will give them a little bit different look than what we saw last season.”
The Bulldogs return four regulars from last year’s lineup including All-Americans Marta Silva Zamora and Emilie Burger and three additional letterwinners.
Georgia opens the season on Sept. 13-15 at the NCAA Fall Preview at Traditions Golf Club in Bryan, Texas, the same layout where Texas A&M will host the 2011 NCAA Championships.
“There’s no doubt it’s always great to start the season off with the preview.” Hester said. “It’s a great chance to see how you stack up with the rest of the country. Our golfers have had a very strong summer. I think they’re going to come back ready to compete and it will be fun to start the season out there. I believe only one of our players Emilie Burger has seen that golf course so it will be important to get the chance to play several rounds there in the fall.”
The remainder of the fall campaign includes the Mason Rudolph Championship on Sept. 24-26, the Tar Heel Invitational on Oct. 8-10 and the PAC 10-SEC Challenge on Nov. 5-7.
The Bulldogs begin the spring with the Puerto Rico event on Feb. 13-15, followed by the Kinderlou Forest Challenge in Valdosta, Ga., on Feb. 27-March 1 and the Battle at Rancho Bernardo on March 20-22. Georgia wraps up the regular season by hosting the 39th annual Liz Murphey Collegiate Classic on April 1-3.
“The Liz Murphy is always competitive and we’ll have a very strong field again,” Hester said. “We’re going with 23 teams, which allows us not only to invite the very best teams in the country but also give some mid-majors from the area like Georgia State, Kennesaw State and Chattanooga a chance to come to Athens and compete.”
Auburn will host the SEC Championships on April 15-17. The NCAA Regionals will be May 5-7 in Daytona Beach, Fla.; Notre Dame, Ind.; and Seattle, Wash., with the top eight teams from each advancing to the NCAAs in Texas on May 17-20.
