Injured players return to practice

By on August 30, 2010

Georgia’s last practice in full pads before Saturday’s season opener was one coach Mark Richt would like to have back.

“I would have to say it left a little to be desired,” Richt said of Monday’s practice. “It wasn’t quite the tempo I was hoping for. I don’t think they were dogging it, but I thought I’d see a little bit more energy.”

Mark Richt will find himself a watergirl short on Saturday, as his wife will not be in attendance.

However, Richt was pleased to see Logan Gray, Demarcus Dobbs and Cornelius Washington out of green jerseys and back on the practice fieldMonday.

“Logan did pretty good. He got through practice, but you could tell [the sprained ankle] was still affecting him to some degree,” Richt said. “Wooten got a lot of work in. He still had a green jersey but he practiced. Dobbs got scout work anyway, and Washington was out of a green jersey today.”

Georgia releases updated depth chart

Akeem Dent, Cordy Glenn and Ben Jones also continued to work their way back into shape in their second practice back after missing a large portion of camp with injuries. And to little surprise, they were all listed as starters on the updated depth chart Georgia released Monday.

The new depth chart afforded few surprises other than DeAngelo Tyson was listed as the starter at nose tackle, with Brandon Wood taking Tyson’s starting spot at defensive end. However, Richt did say Tyson would likely line up at both nose tackle and defensive end during the game.

The hotly contested competition for the starting spot at safety opposite Bacarri Rambo between Jakar Hamilton and Nick Williams appears to have gone in Hamilton’s favor, as Richt announced that Hamilton would start at strong safety and Rambo would start at free safety.

Richt’s wife will not attend opener

There will be another noticeable absence from the Georgia sidelines Saturday: The watergirl, Richt’s wife Katharyn, will be attending a game featuring their son Jon, who plays quarterback at Mars Hill College.

“There’s no question she’s going to watch Jon,” Richt said. “It’s sad, really. I’m bummed out about it. I keep telling her Jon’s got a wife, he’s got a wife now, he doesn’t need his mommy to be there all the time. But she doesn’t agree.”
