Parker’s Practice Report: 8/30

By on August 30, 2010

The media was able to view about the first 15 minutes of practice today.

The green injured jerseys were noticeably fewer than last week, as Ben Jones, Cordy Glenn, Logan Gray, Demarcus Dobbs, and Akeem Dent were all back in action on Monday.

A lot of players had scout team jerseys on, with different numbers, so it was difficult to tell Monday who the walk-ons and reserves were that were injured. However, I did see Rantavious Wooten, and Kolton Houston still in green. Also, Kris Durham was in green today but was going through position work with the wide receivers.

While we were out there, the running backs and quarterbacks were working on the footwork of the quarterback and running back exchange, while the wide receivers worked on their get off from the line of scrimmage. Washaun Ealey was out there practicing, albeit it took a little while to figure out because he was practicing in a No. 10 jersey for some reason.

I was able to watch the safeties and corners work for a little bit with defensive backs coach Scott Lakatos, and Lakatos was drilling them on their responsibilities on an end around. They were working in a nickel package, and the first-team unit at nickel were Vance Cuff, Brandon Boykin, Branden Smith, Jakar Hamilton, and Bacarri Rambo. Although Nick Williams was listed as the starter at strong safety, in the nickel package he was working with the second-team unit alongside Derek Owens, Jordan Love, Sanders Commings, and Shawn Williams – perhaps a sign that the coaching staff is more comfortable with Hamilton in pass coverage than Williams.

Georgia also released their depth chart for the season opener on Monday, and a couple of surprises in there.

1) Deangelo Tyson was listed as the No. 1 at nose tackle – a surprise considering coaches – and players – last week said that Tyson had been working at the No. 1 at defensive end, with Bean Anderson working as the No. 1 at nose tackle. Nevertheless, Tyson is expected to split snaps between the two positions, and if Anderson does well, I’d bet Tyson spends the majority of his time at defensive end.

2) Brandon Wood as a starting defensive end. Although, this is likely due to the fact that Tyson is listed at nose. But still it’s noteworthy that the coaching staff has Wood ahead of Abry Jones and Kiante Tripp at this point.

3) Kris Durham received a ton of praise after the final scrimmage of the spring last Wednesday from offensive coordinator Mike Bobo, and it appears his performance in that scrimmage may have won him a starting spot, as he’s listed as the starter at split end. A.J. Green is listed as the starter at flanker. I also found it interesting that Rantavious Wooten was listed ahead of Logan Gray and Israel Troupe at flanker behind Green considering Wooten hasn’t practiced for much of fall camp.

4) Trinton Sturdivant is listed as the backup left tackle. While this isn’t particularly noteworthy considering that Clint Boling, the starter, is considering one of the nation’s top offensive tackles, it is interesting because Sturdivant was a Freshman All-American two years ago before two consecutive season-ending injuries. Boling can play right tackle, or both guard positions, so it appears that the coaching staff is in fact going to take it very slowly with working Sturdivant in. Bobo said last Wednesday that the coaching staff was starting to see more confidence out of Sturdivant, but that they wanted to work him in slowly to keep him healthy for the entire season – and it appears that the depth chart is right along those lines.

5) Christian Robinson starting at inside linebacker. From conversations with the coaching staff, it’s not necessarily surprising that Robinson has passed Marcus Dowtin at inside linebacker, it is very surprising considering their impact on the field last season. Last season, Dowtin started 4 games and was the third-leading tackler on the team with 57 tackles, while Robinson was accredited with 19 tackles last season in 0 starts. Nevertheless, Robinson obviously has impressed the new defensive staff this spring and fall.

Another quick note I thought Bulldog fans might find interesting: new Athletic Director Greg McGarity is wasting little time getting to work. Not only did he start two days before his official start date, but he’s working late, as he’s still here and it’s 7 pm. Very outgoing personality.
