THE WEEK: Sept. 2-Sept. 8.
The Red & Black’s event guide to happenings — news, variety and sports — in and around Athens from Sept. 2-Sept. 8.
PICK OF THE WEEK: Athens — the band
Ten years ago, kids spent the vast majority of their time on the playground inconspicuously trading Pokémon cards behind the jungle gym and building a miniature stuffed army with Beanie Babies.
The Athens band — comprised of vocalist/guitarist Chase Brown (age 14), bassist Walt Sorrow (age 15), drummer Zak Smith (age 15) and lead guitarist Beau Anderson (age 11) — have nixed childhood fads and obsessions for angsty, in-your-face rock & roll.
However, don’t let their age fool you.
These young rockers, who formed in 2008, draw influence from bands that even out-date most students at the University —Ted Nugent, AC/DC, Aerosmith, Poison and Van Halen, to name a few.
The band has garnered much local acclaim, including appearances at both AthFest and the Human Rights Festival — not bad for a band which boasts only a single member old enough to get his learners permit, and another that is still four years off from being able to purchase his first lottery ticket.
The band’s first single — “She Don’t Even Know” — was recently turned into a music video which shows the band performing to a packed crowd at the Melting Point in all their youthful, energetic glory.
There is even talk of the band’s post-game gig at the 40 Watt Saturday night being the site of yet another music video in the making — show up ready to give these youngsters the undivided attention they deserve, and don’t be camera shy!
