LIVE BLOG: Georgia vs. Louisiana Lafayette
A.J. Green won’t be playing.
Captains: Fred Munzenmaier, Vance Cuff, Demarcus Dobbs, Shaun Chapas Georgia won the coin toss — opted to receive at the start of the second half.
12:21 p.m.: Louisiana Lafayette opened with a 46-yard return on the kick off, starting at its own 47 yard line. Georgia’s defense forced a three-and-out to cover the special teams’ opening kick mishap. Quarterback Aaron Murray and the offense take over, with Murray completing his first pass as a starter for a first down before under-throwing tight end Orson Charles for an incompletion.
12:31 p.m.: The running game seems to be a bit rusty, but Murray hits running back Caleb King on a screen pass, though Georgia couldn’t convert on third down. Drew Butler punted it, hit the endzone, giving the Ragin’ Cajuns the ball at the 20 yard line.
12:33 p.m.: The defense stuffed the Ragin’ Cajuns running game on first down for no gain before quarterback Chris Masson tossed a five-yard pass to tight end Ladarius Green. Georgia cornerback Vance Cuff broke up a pass on third down to force another three-and-out.
12:35 p.m.: Penalty No. 1 of the season — running into the kicker, giving the Cajuns a first down, which was wasted because Georgia’s defense forced the Cajuns to punt once again. Georgia return man Branden Smith fielded the punt at the 24 yard line with no return on the kick.
12:40 p.m.: As the nice announcer guy in the press box just said, Georgia’s Smith is the first player since Champ Bailey to start on offense, defense and special teams. Thanks, announcer guy.
12:41 p.m.: The running game can’t seem to get it going, and Murray completes a pass to Chapas for nine yards and a first down. Carlton Thomas goes in at tailback for his first carries of the season.
12:43 p.m.: Penalty No. 2 of the season — false start. Backed the Dogs up five yards and Murray throws an incomplete pass on first and 15.
12:44 p.m.: Little Thomas picked up eight yards, making it third and seven for Georgia. Murray put some zip on the ball to Kris Durham for 22 yards and a first down.
12:46 p.m.: Logan Gray blew his chance at his first touchdown catch after Murray scrambled to make the throw.
12:49 p.m.: Caleb King scurried for the first score of the game, brushing off the rust. Extra point good. Georgia on the board with seven. The drive marked at 11 plays, 76 yards, taking 5:24 off the clock.
12:57 p.m.: The defense took down Masson on the keep and cornerback Brandon Boykin picked off the Cajuns’ QB on third down, giving Georgia the ball at the ULL 28 yard line.
12:59 p.m.: First and goal for Georgia.
1:00 p.m.: End of the first — third and goal for Georgia.
1:04 p.m.: Murray threw his first career touchdown pass to Durham (his second career TD) for three yards. Well done, frosh. Now keep it going for the next three quarters and 11 more games.
1:07 p.m.: Third down and seven for ULL — the defense is flying all over the field and registered its first sack of the season, courtesy of linebacker Akeem Dent.
1:10 p.m.: Branden Smith’s super power is indeed speed, as he just made a 31-yard return on ULL’s punt. Georgia’s offense takes the field at ULL’s 42 yard line.
First quarter stats:
Georgia first downs: 7 (130 yards on offense)
Murray: 6-of-9 for 62 yards
Thomas: four rushes for 31 yards
1:15 p.m.:Blair Walsh knocks through his first field goal of the season — a 52-yarder.He is 7-of-11 in his career from 50-plus yards.
1:17 p.m.: The Cajuns can’t get anything going on offense — seems as though all the preseason talk of a more aggressive Georgia defense is actually coming to fruition. Third and seven for the Cajuns.
1:19 p.m.: Georgia forces another ULL punt.
1:20 p.m.: When Branden Smith turns the corner, sure hope opposing special team coverages have their ankles double taped. The kid is quick once he gets going. Georgia gets the ball on its own 48.
1:27 p.m.: It’s third and a country mile for Georgia after two back-to-back false start penalties and a stupid throw by Murray to Aron White for a loss of 12. And now Drew Butler is on to punt it away and special teams pins on the ULL 10 on a 46-yard kick.
1:31 p.m.: ULL gets its first penalty — holding, which Georgia declines and takes the one-yard loss. The defense is completely shutting down the Cajuns’ offense. And that offense isn’t mediocre. Georgia forces another punt and the offense will take over at its own 48. Don’t blow this series with more false start penalties, offensive line.
1:34 p.m.: DJ drops a little T.I. to amp up the stadium. Thomas runs around the field for a loss of nearly three yards on first down.
1:35 p.m.: Murray to Durham for 42 yards to take the Dogs to the ULL 13. Shaun Chapas takes the ball in for a score. Georgia 24, ULL 0.
1:41 p.m.: Goergia’s defense has not allowed a big play thus far, and ULL faces another third and long. ULL calls its first time out. Key the DJ Khaled song — everybody’s hands went up and then linebacker Justin Houston registered a sack for a loss of seven. ULL punts again. The Cajuns’ are not enjoying this wonderful Saturday of college football. Branden Smith waves for a fair catch. Georgia’s offense takes over at its own 30.
1:45 p.m.: The pocket collapsed on Murray, and he got back to the line of scrimmage with his feet. But in the same quarter he threw his first touchdown, he threw his first interception. Durham was the intended receiver. Granted, the majority of the blame was on the receiver for bobbling and dropping the ball. ULL gets on the board with a 60-yard touchdown pass from Masson to Green. Georgia 24, ULL 7.
1:50 p.m.: Defensive coordinator Todd Grantham lit up his defense after that embarrassing series. And he’s still screaming. Go Grantham. ULL calls a time out.
1:52 p.m.: Murray makes a great play with his feet to evade the ULL defenders and completes a 22- yard pass for a first down on the ULL 28. ULL calls another time out.
1:55 p.m.: Murray throws the ball away after protection breaks down again, and it was almost intercepted by ULL. And by almost, I mean Murray threw it straight to the ULL kid and he dropped it. Guess that’s why he’s not on the offensive side of the ball for the Cajuns.
1:57 p.m.: The same quarter Murray threw his first touchdown and interception, he also ran for his first touchdown as time expired in the second quarter (the play is now under review by the zebras.) But the call on the field stands. Georgia 31, ULL 7 at the half.
Murray is having an exceptional first game for a freshman, despite his interception. The kid’s ability to evade defenders and buy time is incredibly invaluable and unteachable. He seems to have great control of the huddle as well.
Grantham is probably still chewing out his defense (secondary) for giving up that touchdown. My counterpart Nick Parker has 20 bucks on that. Can’t wait to ask about what flew out of Grantham’s mouth during his angry rant.
Second half — Georgia receives
2:22 p.m.: Kick off of the second half fielded by Cameron Allen and taken to the Georgia 46.
2:23 p.m.: The Dogs are really utilizing Branden Smith — just rushed for 17 yards. Murray then completed a pass to his buddy Orson Charles.
2:25 p.m.: Walsh contributes three more points to the day on a 48-yarder. Georgia 34, ULL 7
2:28 p.m.: ULL flagged on a false start penalty and is now on its own three yard line. I’m smelling a safety with the way this defense has been playing.
2:31 p.m.: ULL punts from its own endzone. It’s almost blocked and with the help of a favorable bounce, gets it to go 48 yards. Georgia takes over on its own 47.
2:34 p.m.: After the play fell apart for the Dogs, Murray scrambled for 21 yards after a key block by Carlton Thomas.
The stadium is quiet. So fans are either bored or asleep. Let the Georgia Bulldogs chant ensue.
2:38 p.m.: Murray tosses it to Durham for the first down. Durham really showed up to play today, stepping in for A.J. Green.
2:42 p.m.: Murray is spreading it around, throwing for his second touchdown of the day to Munzenmaier. The freshman is holding his own and somewhat proving his forgettable G-Day Game performance was not telling of his true abilites. Georgia 41, ULL 7
Quick Stat: The Cajuns registered just two first downs in the first half — one coming after a Georgia penalty.
2:48 p.m.: Hutson Mason is warming up on the sideline, hinting at the possibility the freshman may step in under center for the offense’s next series. I wonder how much he’s thrown up from nerves throughout the day today. Probably as much as a drunk freshman attending his first Georgia game.
2:52 p.m.: The Cajuns apparently thought since they’ve been having so much success on offense throughout the day (not) that they’d go for it on fourth and one. Akeem Dent made the stop, which probably made the Cajuns’ quarterback cry. That guy’s been getting really close with the ground.
2:53 p.m.: Mason took his first snap as a Bulldog and threw his first pass for his first touchdown to Logan Gray (another backup quarterback), also his first touchdown as a receiver. It’s a day of firsts. Georgia 48, ULL 7
2:57 p.m.: The Cajuns got a first down. And then pigs starting flying over Sanford Stadium. Now they’re punting. That didn’t last long. (That’s what she said). Georgia takes over on its own 28.
Quick Stat: ULL passing yards — 95, 60 of which came from the Cajuns one touchdown pass, which Grantham is probably still screaming about.
3:06 p.m. Georgia punts for the third time today, pinning ULL on its own 10 after Butler booted it 59 yards. Not to worry, Jakar Hamilton picked off Masson (who probably just wants to go lay in his bed and cry some more) and took it in for the score. Georgia 55, ULL 7. This is the largest point total in a season opener in the Richt era. I think the Dogs are somewhat hushing the critics. Though the true test comes with the SEC opener against an impressive Gamecock squad next Saturday.
3:14 p.m.: Adding insult to injury, Sanders Commings just picked off ULL’s Masson — making it the third Georgia interception of the day — and returned it for 25 yards. Georgia’s Mason remains under center for the Bulldogs.
3:17 p.m.: The Bulldogs second teamers go three-and-out, making Butler punt for the fourth time today. I would understand if Butler’s tired at the end of the day. He’s been working his behind off today.
6:55 p.m.: I survived the mad house that was the locker room during post game interviews and made it home. And the final score was 55-7, if you didn’t know already from the kabillion tweets that I’m sure were posted and the highlights on the mid-game SportsCenter.
