Freshmen help extend Georgia winning streak
Two freshmen led the No.25 Georgia women’s soccer team to a 5-1 win over the Georgia State Panthers on Sunday at GSU Soccer Field in Atlanta.
Georgia forward Meghan Gibbons led the team with three goals while midfielder Nicole Locandro had two goals of her own to help improve the Bulldogs’ record to 4-1-0 for the year.
Georgia struck first as junior midfielder Jamie Pollock’s pass found the foot of Locandro, who shot it in the midst of Panther defenders for a 1-0 lead late in the 23rd minute.
But Georgia State was able to respond in just under three minutes as the Panthers’ leading scorer, Sarah Bennett, took the ball at the top of the 18-yard box and shot the ball into the bottom right of the net to tie the score at 1-1.
That would be the last of the Panthers scoring opportunities on the afternoon, as Georgia opened the floodgates and began pouring it onto Georgia State.
With less then four minutes left in the half as sophomore midfielder Laura Eddy was able to take the ball from the midfield and find a hole in the middle of the Panthers’ defense where Gibbons was ready and shot it past the Georgia State goalkeeper, Heidi Blankenship, to end the half with a 2-1 Bulldog lead.
Locandro opened the second half, just as she did against Mercer on Friday night and started the scoring for the Bulldogs as her fourth goal of the season came on the assist from junior midfielder Ashley Miller.
Not to be undone by her fellow classmate, Gibbons added her second goal of the game in the 68th minute from the assist by freshman forward Carli Shultis, making the score 4-1. In the 73rd minute, Gibbons finished off her hat trick when her shot from the corner of the 18 again found the back of the net for her team-leading fifth of the year.
“Once I get started, it’s just about seeing their weaknesses and exploiting them,” Gibbons told Georgia Sports Communications. “It feels good. On Friday [after the Mercer game] we talked about not taking teams lightly, and we came out here and proved that it shouldn’t be like that.”
Georgia dominated the Panthers on offense, outshooting them 21-4 for the game, while getting the job done on defense as well as redshirt sophomore goalkeeper Ashley Baker had to make one save the entire game.
During the team’s four-game winning streak, the Bulldogs had a school record four straight games of scoring three goals or more.
Georgia will be tested this weekend as they will make a trip out to California to play the 2009 national runner-up No. 2 Stanford Cardinals on Friday at 10 p.m. — and then the No. 8 Santa Clara on Sunday at 2:30 p.m. Both games will be played at Palo Alto, Calif., on Standford’s home field.
