Soccer freshman earns weekly honor
Midfielder Nicole Locandro earned the second-consecutive SEC Freshman of the Week honor for Georgia’s soccer team.
Locandro amassed a seven-point weekend for the Bulldogs with three goals and one assist during Georgia’s road sweep of Georgia State and Mercer. The Marietta native’s goal and assist against Mercer helped overcome a formidable 2-0 halftime deficit, Georgia’s largest deficit overcome in a victory since the 2001 season.
She would follow her performance with a two-goal performance against Georgia State.
Locandro is now tied for the team lead with 10 points this season, including four goals through the first five games.
Last week, freshman midfielder Alexa Newfield brought home the weekly award for logging one goal and three assists against Utah and Kansas.
Volleyball drops final match in tournament
Georgia volleyball was edged by North Colorado 3-2 in the championship match of the Northern Colorado Classic.
The Bulldogs (6-1) has their six-game winning streak broken with the loss, which had been just the sixth time in school history the team had started a season winning six games.
“We are deeply disappointed with the end result tonight, but we fought hard enough to win and just didn’t manage our ball control down the stretch. This match will test our character moving forward and we should be able to use some valuable lessons learned here tonight,” head coach Joel McCartney told Georgia Sports Communications.
Georgia’s squad went 3-1 on the weekend, defeating the University of Missouri-Kansas City, Fairfield and South Dakota en route to their appearance in the championship match.
The team was led by a strong performance from its outside hitters, notably freshman Brittany Northcutt and senior Erika Clark.
Northcutt posted the first 20-kill match of her young career in the final match, while Clark posted the first double-double of Georgia’s young season after logging 10 kills and 15 digs.
Cross country sweeps meet
For the second year in a row, Georgia’s cross country teams swept both the men’s and women’s races of the Georgia Cross Country Invitational.
Juniors Kristie Krueger and Brett Richardson led the Bulldogs to victory by winning their events for the women’s and men’s teams, respectively.
Krueger ran a personal-best time of 16:55.52 on Georgia’s newly-designed course to defeat Mississippi State, Tulane, Georgia Tech, Mercer, Young Harris and Clark Atlanta among others.
Richardson logged his first collegiate win with an time of 24:33.18 in the men’s 8k race.
“The weather was cool which ended up being a great thing for this meet and I’m proud of how both our teams ran today,” Pigg said. “We wanted some good competition here at home so I’m glad everyone showed up and raced.”
