A.J. Green suspended four games
The NCAA’s decision concerning A.J. Green’s eligibility was finally made public Wednesday afternoon — and the news was negative for Georgia football.
Green will miss four games in compliance with an NCAA suspension passed down by the organization’s student-athlete reinstatement staff.
The junior wide receiver has been declared ineligible for violating NCAA rules concerning the acceptance of agent benefits.
According to the facts of the case as submitted by the University, Green sold his game-worn jersey from the 2009 Independence Bowl in Shreveport, Louis., to an unnamed individual who met the definition of an agent as defined by the NCAA. By NCAA definition, an agent is any individual who markets or promotes a student-athlete.
Green accepted approximately $1,000 for the sale, which he has since repaid the value in full to charity.
“I want to apologize to my coaches, teammates and the Georgia fans for the mistake in judgment,” Green said in a statement released by the University. “I very much regret all that has taken place and the distraction that¹s been caused.”
The star receiver and preseason All-American, who has been consistently projected as one of the top prospects in the 2011 NFL Draft, was previously held out of Georgia’s season opener against Louisiana-Lafeyette due to the impending decision from the NCAA.
With the suspension lasting an additional three games on the Bulldogs’ schedule, Green could miss as many as three SEC games — South Carolina, Arkansas and Mississippi State.
Georgia holds the right to appeal the suspension to lessen or eliminate the punishment, but Green would remain ineligible until the conclusion of the appeals process.
In addition to the current suspension, Green has also been linked to agent scandal that is sweeping college football — one that has affected players at the universities of Alabama, North Carolina and South Carolina. There is still no ruling passed down from the NCAA as to Green’s involvement in the matter.
