The Week: Athens events Sept. 9-15
Pick of the Week: OF MONTREAL
Athens may not be hosting the Bulldogs’ nail biting clash against the Gamecocks, but that doesn’t mean Saturday night has to be any less exhilarating.
Known for their eclectic mixture of styles — think sing-along choruses combined with a flirtation between catchy pop and quirky, electronic lo-fi — the Classic City’s own of Montreal will be taking stage along side The Goons for an unforgettable performance at the 40 Watt.
The show takes place just two days prior to the release of “False Priest,” the band’s tenth full-length album.
Saturday marks the beginning of a full tour that will have the band hopping between continents — first with a lengthy stint in the U.S., followed by various shows across Europe, including Denmark, Ireland, Germany and France, before returning again to America.
Beginning September 13, Grammy-nominated singer, song writer and dancer Janelle Monáe, who appears several times on “False Priest,” will be joining the band on tour.
Although of Montreal are Athenians at heart, their music can be heard far and wide.
“Wraith Pinned to the Mist and Other Games” can be heard in an Outback Steakhouse commercial and also appeared in both an episode and the soundtrack of Showtime’s “Weeds.”
More recently, a poster for of Montreal can be seen in the movie “Going the Distance” starring Drew Barrymore and Justin Long.
