By on October 9, 2010

MACON – The sixth-ranked Georgia men’s golf team extended its lead on Saturday in the Brickyard Collegiate Championship.

With Macon native Russell Henley leading the way at The Brickyard at Riverside, the Bulldogs fired a second-round 4-under 284 to move to 5-under 571 for the tournament. Georgia entered the day with a one-shot lead and now has a nine-shot advantage over Georgia Tech and Florida State.

Henley, a senior, moved into the individual lead by shooting a 6-under 66, including five birdies on the back nine. Henley is at 6-under 138, one shot better than Georgia Tech’s Kyle Scott.

Seniors Harris English and Hudson Swafford are in the group at 4-under 140 after shooting a 1-under 71 and an even-par 72, respectively, Saturday.  Sophomore T.J. Mitchell fired a 3-over 75 to go to 9-over 153, and freshman Keith Mitchell signed for a 5-over 77 to move to 15-over 159.

“This was the kind of day we wanted to have,” Georgia coach Chris Haack. “We built some mometum on the back nine Friday and we were able to carry it over today. The guys struck the ball well and scored well today. I am proud of Russell. He really wanted to do well down here in Macon, and I had a feeling he would go low at some point this weekend.”

Playing as individuals, senior Rob Bennett shot a 5-over 77 and sophomore Scott McAlpine had a 2-over 74 on Saturday. Bennett is at 11-over 155 and McAlpine is at 14-over 158 for the tournament.

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – The sixth-ranked Georgia women’s golf team fired an even-par 288 in Saturday’s second round of the Tar Heel Invitational at UNC’s Finley Golf Course, moving the Bulldogs into a tie for ninth on the team leaderboard.

Marta Silva Zamora led Georgia with a 3-under 69, her seventh par-or-better effort in eight rounds this season. The Bulldogs also counted an even-par 72 from Milena Savich, a 73 from Kendall Wright and a 74 from Emilie Burger, while dropping Amelia Hill’s 78.

“We played better today,” head coach Kelley Hester said. “Marta was very solid, and Milena hung in there and put together a solid even-par round. We did drop a few strokes coming in, but even-par is not too bad as a team. Hopefully, we’ll have a strong day tomorrow and climb the leaderboard even more.”

The Bulldogs teed off from No. 10 for the second straight day and again struggled early. Georgia played the first two holes 3-over as a team but was 3-under during the rest of the day.

Following a bogey at No. 10, Silva Zamora birdied No. 13, No. 15 and No. 17 before bogeying No. 18 to turn at 1-under. She notched additional birdies at No. 3 and No. 7 on the front side.

No. 1 Alabama opened up a 15-shot lead after shooting 14-under 274. Following the Tide at 551 are No. 3 Duke at 566, No. 4 LSU at 570, No. 11 North Carolina at 578, No. 10 Virginia and No. 15 Wake Forest at 579, the Bulldogs and Texas A&M at 7-over, 583, No. 7 Vanderbilt and No. 14 Tulane at 585, No. 20 South Carolina at 588 and No. 23 Florida at 589.

Alabama’s Brooke Pancake maintained the individual lead with a 3-under 69 that moved her to 10-under 134 through 36 holes. Teammate Camilla Lennarth is two strokes back.

For Georgia, Silva Zamora is tied for 12th at 3-under 141, Burger and Savich are both tied for 42nd at 147, Wright is tied for 50th at 148 and Hill is tied for 87th at 159.
