AutismUGA hosts dart tournament: Researchers to get funds
AutismUGA is hoping to make a bull’s-eye tonight with their dart tournament to support kids in Northeast Georgia with Autism.
“It’s going to be so fun. We are having live music and drink specials all night,” said Michelle Appelman, a senior special education major from Mobile, Ala., and director of fundraising for AutismUGA. “We really encourage people to sign up at the door tonight.”
Teams of two will be competing in a dart tournament for prizes including footballs signed by Georgia players, gift cards for restaurants in Athens and even cash.
In 301 dart tournament style, players subtract points with each mark they hit, and whoever gets to zero first wins the round.
Founded in 2008, AutismUGA is the South’s first collegiate philanthropy organization dedicated to Autism awareness.
The student group reaches out to Northeast Georgia community members affected by Autism, providing them with information about local resources.
Money raised tonight will support research with Autism Speaks.
Scientists report one in 98 children in Georgia are diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder, and there has been a 600 percent increase in diagnoses in the last 20 years.
“Last Thursday, ‘The Night of Too Many Stars,’ hosted by Jon Stewart, raised almost $1 million to support programs for children and families affected by Autism Spectrum Disorder,” Appelman said. “I hope that people in Athens are inspired by what they were able to do, and feel like they can make a difference for kids in Northeast Georgia.”
Different University clubs and organizations are sponsoring teams tonight, and all are welcome to attend.
“It’s not too late to register,” said Asia Bartlett, executive director of AutismUGA. “The more teams we have, the livelier the atmosphere.”
