UGAKey purchased by social learning company; Free service will expand

By on February 15, 2011

For many University students, the key to finding the perfect professor will no longer go by the name UGAKey.

Koofers.com, a social learning company,  acquired the media rights of the University and announced on Feb. 14 the purchase of UGAKey.com.

Serving thousands of universities across the country, Koofers.com uses a social media network, which will connect the University to its nationwide social learning community.

Students can gain free access to Koofers by registering with their Facebook login.

Koofers declined to reveal the terms and price of the purchase.

“As a private company, we aren’t disclosing deal terms,” said Maggie Hatfield, CMO of Koofers.

But the UGAKey site has already undergone some drastic changes.

Typing in “UGAKey.com” in an Internet browser will now link students to Koofers.com.

It also leads them directly to a message from the founders of UGAKey.com which reads, “UGAKey.com is now part of Koofers and all students will continue to have free access to the existing UGAKey.com grade data forever.”

Since its founding in 2007, thousands of students have used the free data provided at UGAKey.com to find information regarding professors and grade point averages from the University — information dating back to 1999.

“We started UGAKey.com in order to provide information about professors, courses and GPAs which the University shut down,” said Chris Lindsey, a University alumnus and one of the founders of the site. “We used that information a lot, so we wanted to keep it going.”

When Koofers first contacted founders Lindsey, Noah Mink and Paul Ruddle, the three alumni were more than a little surprised.

“My first emotion was shock,” Lindsey said. “But after that, we just wanted to make sure that the information from the Key stayed free and available to UGA students.”

Having graduated in 2008, Lindsey said he, Mink and Ruddle had less time to work on keeping the site updated.

The new site will provide students with the information previously available on UGAKey.com as well as many newer services.

“Koofers will be able to do a lot more for students as a full-time social learning company,” Lindsey said.

Hatfield said UGAKey.com was a popular class registration website with accurate information.

“UGAKey.com is one of the most widely used sites in this category, particularly for the course registration process,” Hatfield said. “It is a popular tool with solid data.”

Hatfield said plans for the new website have already been put into action.

“Koofers is aggregating all kinds of digital content — including data from UGAKey — and consistently making it richer, more interactive, and sharable for use inside and outside the classroom,” Hatfield said.
