Koofers links information to Facebook

By on March 7, 2011

What happens when UGAKey.com meets Facebook?

For the last two and a half weeks, students have had the opportunity to use the new Koofers website to access course and faculty information that was previously available on UGAKey.com.

The new site allows students all the information provided by the Key website and more, and  it also links to the user’s Facebook profile.

Koofers also recently introduced its new “Uloop” — a classifieds marketplace that allows University students to buy and sell different items, such as tickets and furniture.

Thus far, the response from students to the website has been mostly positive.

“It’s definitely different and I’m still getting used to it,” said Lois Kim, a freshman from Suwanee. “But Koofers has a lot more on it than the Key did and I think it’s a good change.”

Co-founder of the UGA Key site, Chris Lindsey, said Koofers is able to do things the Key just could not do.

“One thing we wanted to develop, but simply didn’t have the resources for, was the professor ratings and course materials,” Lindsey said. “Both of which Koofers has included on their site.”

Koofers.com assimilated and consolidated all the information that was previously available on the Key site, including course syllabi and grade point averages from previous semesters.

Since Koofers also links to the users’ Facebook pages, users can see which courses their friends are taking or have taken in past semesters.

With the development of much more information on the Koofers website, students can now use the site more often than just during registration time, Lindsey said.

“Koofers offers old exams, study guides, syllabi and other course materials, which can really help students that are already enrolled in the course,” Lindsey said.

All of these developments on the Koofers website are free of charge, but require the user to have a Facebook profile to receive full access to the course information.

But some students prefer to keep their social networking sites separate.

“I see the advantages because you can connect with the website at a more personal level,” said Daniel Jones, a junior from Monroe. “But I don’t like that I’m required to link it to my Facebook page for full access.”

Some students have yet to utilize Koofers during a time of class registration.

“Hopefully, when it comes time for registering for classes, Koofers will be as good as the Key,” Kim said.
