University Cabinet approves tailgating changes, smoking ban and service animal requirements

By on March 24, 2011

Perhaps North Campus started looking a little empty.

The University Cabinet approved three specific changes to the Game Day policy for North Campus during this morning’s meeting.

The changes include an extension of the set up time to five hours before kickoff instead of four.

Also, tables are now allowed to be up to six feet long, and tents are once again allowed on the North Campus Quad.

Tim Burgess, senior vice president for finance and administration, said the initial intent for the policy was not to ban tailgating on North Campus completely.

“Our changes from last year were not supposed to say, ‘We don’t want tailgating on North Campus,’” he said. “The essence of the changes was to change the type of behavior and the kind of experience.”

Burgess added that no extra regulation would be put in place of those tailgating at Myers Quad.

A University Smoking ban was also passed during the meeting.

The ban prohibits smoking within 35 feet of entrance or exit doors of facilities. It also banned smoking completely in the Health Sciences Campus.

Tom Jackson, vice president for public affairs, said the ban would not be police enforced.

“It’s not a police enforced matter. It’s not a law matter. It’s a University policy matter,” he said.

He also added that the University Health Center offers classes to help smokers quit the habit.

Finally, the Cabinet also approved a new service animal policy, which requires all dogs on campus to be registered as service animals.
