Duo lives life on the road, tours U.S. with dog, baby

Chain saw accidents are rarely good omens, but for Hymn for Her, the path was cleared.

“The chain saw accident paved our way,” said Lucy Tight, who trades off singing and playing instruments with Wayne Waxing.

Tight and Waxing were part of a former three-piece band and were staying with a friend, Johnny Lowe, in Tennessee when the accident occurred.

While cutting down a tree, bandmate “E.J.” was struck in the head after the chain saw bucked.

Lowe felt bad about it and offered them a cigar box guitar, which were popular in the 19th   century and during the Great Depression.

“The unique thing is it makes there sound like there’s four of us when really there’s two,” Tight said in reference to using a cigar box  guitar.

Though from Philadelphia, Tight and Waxing spend more time living in their Airstream trailer than in a house or hotel.

They live life on the road.

“We don’t have a home.  Philadelphia was where we were born and raised and where we go home,” Tight said. “We call it home because it feels more like home than anywhere else, but we don’t have a roof anywhere, unless we’re on the road.”

The trailer they live in comes with their baby and their dog named Pokey.

Both make frequent appearances in the duo’s Youtube videos, and are even featured on the cover of the pair’s new album.

The outfit’s latest album, “Lucy and Wayne and the Amairican Stream,” was recorded in the trailer while the two-piece were on the road.

“We were just on tour and we were in those places,” Tight said.  “We were living and practicing in the Airstream.”

The group recorded the album in multiple places such as an RV park in Malibu, Calif., outside a garage in Sarasota, Fla., and in the pair’s home, the City of Brotherly Love.

Though the duo has traveled and performed all throughout the nation, this will be the first time Tight and Waxing perform in Athens.

“We have never played Athens before,” Tight said. “We are always excited to play places we never played before.”

For such a multi-genre group, whose sounds ranges from the purest bluegrass to the grungiest garage rock, influences are spread out.

Influences include the jazzy sound of trio Lambert, Hendricks and Ross and the down-home country styles of Johnny Cash and Willie Nelson.

Hymn for Her also attributes Led Zeppelin, Joni Mitchell.

The future is looking bright for Hymn for Her, as its sound is being sought out throughout the nation.

“It’s a full glass of water,” Waxing said.

Outside of the clichés and one-liners, Hymn for Her is looking to possibly record another album while on tour this summer.

If money allows, the duo will release it on vinyl.

“We’re thinking about making another album sometime this summer on the road,” Tight said.  “Maybe a double album, we’re not sure.”
