Man posing as student identified

By on March 29, 2011

The unknown man who posed as Connor Reynolds Saturday is not unknown to law officials. He’s also not unknown to Athens.

This man was arrested Saturday on DUI charges. The name given on the police report is not consistent with the man’s real identity.

Thomas Kelly Scardino Jr., 20, was identified as the man who posed as University student Connor Reynolds during a DUI arrest, according to reports. He attended the University as a freshman during the summer of 2009, according to the Registrar’s Office.

Saturday’s arrest, in which Scardino has not been charged, is the sixth arrest he has been involved in during the past two years, according to various reports. Scardino was also named a wanted person by the Statesboro Police Department in 2010 and was issued warrants for four additional charges in the last two years.

A week prior to his arrest in Athens, Scardino was arrested and charged with disorderly conduct and underage possession by Tybee Island Police, according to the Tybee Island Police Department.

Hilda Sorrow, Athens-Clarke County Police public information assistant, said the police had no further information about Scardino Tuesday afternoon.

“When this report was written, it was written up with Connor Reynolds’ information, so I have no further information about this case,” Sorrow said.

Numerous attempts to reach the detective assigned to Reynolds’ case were unsuccessful Tuesday afternoon.

During Saturday’s arrest, Scardino was pulled over while driving a car belonging to Jeffrey Lukken and was accompanied by Hannah Hardison, 18, who was also arrested. He provided police with Reynolds’ actual date of birth and phone  number during the arrest.

Thomas Scardino has been arrested six times in two years.

The Red & Black reported Monday that Scardino borrowed Lukken’s truck after asking him for permission at a party.

In a conversation between Lukken and Reynolds, Lukken reportedly said he knows Scardino because they have been neighbors in the past.

Reynolds also told The Red & Black Monday Lukken said Scardino has left Athens and deleted his Facebook account.

Reynolds also reported he lost his wallet prior to the incident, which may have led to his ID’s use for illegal activities.

Lukken said he didn’t identify Scardino to The Red & Black earlier because he wanted “to get all of [his] facts straightened” and talk to his father, who is an attorney.

He also said that he didn’t know Reynolds prior to Monday’s report.

“Never knew him, never seen his ID, never seen him,” Lukken said. “That’s one thing that worried me. I didn’t want to be associated with this case of stolen wallet or ID. I wanted to make sure people knew I was in no way associated with this kid who got arrested. And obviously, I got the raw end of this too, cause I’m out the $150 for the impound fee.”
