Georgia Theatre to open its doors Aug. 1

By on June 1, 2011

The Georgia Theatre is on its way back.

The legendary music venue, which was gutted by fire in June 2009, announced it will open its doors for business on Aug. 1. The Glands, an Athens indie band which formed in the late 1990s, will be the first headliner for the Theatre’s new era.

“As construction nears completion we can feel Athens and the Southeastern music community getting excited with us,” said Wilmot Greene, co-owner of the Georgia Theatre. “We can’t wait to unveil what we believe will be he finest music venue of our size in the region.”

Shows the following weeks include Chuck Leavell and Friends, Blackberry Smoke, RJD2, Bela Fleck and the Felcktones, J Roddy Walston and the Business, Big Boi and a two-night stint with the Drive-By Truckers.

While Greene and co-owner Scott Orvold worked to preserve the setup and overall feel of the original Theatre, they also made numerous improvements, including building a larger stage, adding a third viewing level, bigger dressing rooms and bathrooms, and upping its capacity to hold more than 1,000 guests.

β€œIt’s exciting to give back to the people and community that has been so supportive of us. The light at the end of the tunnel is becoming blinding and it looks glorious,” said Orvold.

The original marquee and brick walls are in place, as well as a support beam that withstood the fire. The venue features reclaimed wood from the original venue to be used for the bars and as decorative pieces throughout the building. There will also be a rooftop restaurant and bar via a separate entrance and elevator that has all outdoor seating.

All tickets go on sale June 6.
