DOG DAYS OF SUMMER: A look at what some Bulldogs and Lady Bulldogs are doing this summer

By on June 16, 2011

Watching top Georgia athletes past and present perform doesn’t stop during the summer months, in fact one could argue summertime is as busy as any other season of the year. So to while away the days until the Bulldogs hit the gridiron, here’s a host of Georgia’s best to cheer and keep tabs on in the upcoming months.

GOLF

Russell Henley is not the only former Georgia player at the U.S. Open this week at Congressional Country Club in Bethesda, Md.

RUSSELL HENLEY

Bubba Watson is also in Open play this week, just one of the five former Bulldogs playing professional golf for a living. Watson has won twice this season and sits second in FedEx Cup Standings.

Christo Greyling, who played with the Bulldogs a decade ago, also qualified for the U.S. Open following years of struggling with illness and his game.

Henley tees off at 7:33 a.m. Thursday, while Watson and Greyling tee off at 8:28 and 9:01 a.m., respectively.

Former Bulldogs also playing on the PGA Tour this season, but not at the Open, are Ryuji Imada, Chris Kirk, Kevin Kisner and Bill Kratzert. There are four former Georgia players on the Nationwide Tour — Justin Bolli, Paul Claxton, Will Claxton and Brendon Todd.

Meanwhile recent graduates Harris English and Hudson Swafford are also busy, with English working to make the Walker Cup team and Swafford playing in tournaments while preparing for PGA’s Qualifying School.

Former Georgia players are on the LPGA Tour as well, including Taylor Leon, Jean Reynolds, Reilley Rankin and Whitney Wade.

WOMEN’S BASKETBALL

Four former Lady Bulldogs are showcasing their abilities in the WNBA this summer, including recent graduate Porsha Phillips, who is playing for the San Antonio Silver Stars.

PORSHA PHILLIPS

Joining Phillips in the league are 11-year veterans Coco and Kelly Miller, playing with Atlanta and Washington, respectively, and Kara Braxton, who is in her seventh WNBA season and second with the Phoenix Mercury. Phillips has played in all three games so far, averaging 14 minutes a game during the Silver Stars 3-0 start.

Coco Miller is a starter for the Dream, averaging 10.5 points per game, while her sister Kelly starts for the Mystics and is chipping in 11.7 points per game. Braxton starts as well for the Mercury, adding 6.5 points per game at the forward/center spot.

SOFTBALL

The Georgia softball season didn’t finish the way seniors Taylor Schlopy, Megan Wiggins and Alisa Goler wanted it to, but the end of their collegiate careers is not the end of their playing days.

TAYLOR SCHLOPY

The three were selected in the 2011 National Pro Fastpitch Senior Draft this spring, and joined their newly-appointed teams for the start of the season last week. Schlopy went to the Akron Racers with the second overall pick of the draft, while Wiggins and Goler were both selected by the Chicago Bandits.

Schlopy has proven a wise pick for the Racers, as the first week of the season saw her hit .462 with a home run and 3 RBI. She drove in the winning run in the Racers’ win over the NPF Diamonds last weekend.

Goler took little time getting adjusted as well, as she blasted the first home run of her professional career to help the Bandits beat the Florida Pride last weekend.

SWIMMING & DIVING

Chris Colwill continues to make waves in the world of men’s diving.

The former Georgia All-American and NCAA champion was named on the U.S. roster for the 2011 World Championships held July 16-24 in Shanghai, China. Colwill, who represented the U.S. in the 2008 Beijing Olympics, will compete on the 1-meter springboard for Team USA. The competition serves as the first opportunity for countries to qualify for the 2012 London Olympics.

“Chris never ceases to amaze me,” Georgia diving coach Dan Laak said to Georgia Sports Information. “He has had to battle through some recent injuries, but to get back to this level so quickly is just so impressive. We could not be prouder of Chris, and we’re hoping he continues to do well on the international stage.”

TENNIS

The Marathon Man returns to the scene of his greatest-known victory.

JOHN ISNER

Former men’s tennis standout John Isner (now ranked 46th in the world) returns to Wimbledon in few weeks, the Grand Slam tournament where he won the longest match in the game’s history.

His 6-4, 3-6, 6-7 (7), 7-6 (3), 70-68 victory over France’s Nicolas Mahut catapulted the popularity of the former Bulldog All-American, and Isner has continued to find fans with his style of play.

Isner gave Rafael Nadal all he could handle in the first round of the French Open a few weeks ago, but was unable to stop in the world’s top-ranked player in a 6-4, 6-7(2), 6-7(2), 6-2, 6-4 loss at Roland Garros.

Isner learns who he faces in the first round of Wimbledon when the draw is released June 17.

BASEBALL

Sophomore Diamond Dog shortstop Kyle Farmer headed north for the summer, taking his talents to the Bourne Braves in the Cape Cod Baseball League.

KYLE FARMER

Farmer hit .308 for Georgia this season, leading the Diamond Dogs in starts (65), multiple RBI games (18), was second in multiple hit games (22) and carried a 16-game hit streak during the season.

He finished tied for third in the SEC in RBI (58), second in assists (206) and fourth for fielding double plays (45). The Cape Cod League has been a summer destination for Georgia players for several years, and the league boasts some of the top collegiate underclassmen in the country. Bourne’s season started June 10 and runs through early August.
