Bulldogs signing day primer

By on January 26, 2012

It’s that time of the year again in the football recruiting world.

National Signing Day on Feb. 1 is set to provide thrills and excitement as recruits commit and officially sign their letters of intent to the school of their choice.

One week awaits the end to the typical roller coaster ride called a recruiting cycle.

Recruits have committed and decommitted, visited and not visited, all the while learning about potential institutions that will bring them in on scholarship for the next four years.

That thrill ride hasn’t slowed down in Athens, as the Bulldogs have been hot and heavy on the recruiting trail.

In what is a consensus top 15 recruiting class at the moment — with 16 total commitments — Georgia will look to take at least four more commitments, and has plenty of potential to fill that.

After the decommitment of Chester Brown, Avery Young becomes perhaps the most important recruit left on the Bulldogs’ board.

Young is a 6-foot-6, 270-pound offensive tackle out of Palm Beach Gardens, Fla.

He is unanimously rated as a top 100 recruit by all major publications, including getting a five-star rating by Scout.com.

He is expected to choose between Auburn, Florida, Georgia and Miami (Fla.) on Signing Day, and it’s thought that Auburn and Georgia are his two finalists.

Josh Harvey-Clemons, a 6-foot-5, 210-pound outside linebacker prospect out of Valdosta, is the highest-rated target left on the Bulldogs’ board.

He is rated in the top 30 prospects nationwide by Scout.com, Rivals.com and ESPN.

He has scheduled a 9 a.m. announcement on Signing Day announcement at his high school ceremony between Florida, Florida State and Georgia.

Memphis, Tenn., cornerback Sheldon Dawson is highly likely to end up in the Bulldogs’ class, and would give Georgia its first defensive back commit for 2012.

He is committed to Memphis, but several reports indicate that the Bulldogs are now in the lead for the 5-foot-11, 170-pound speedster.
Dawson is expected to choose between UGA and Memphis on Signing Day.

JaQuay Williams and Cordarrelle Patterson are two receiver prospects that Georgia is still vying for.

Williams is a 6-foot-4, 205-pound receiver at Sandy Creek High School, which bred Detroit Lions superstar and former Georgia Tech Yellow Jacket Calvin Johnson.

He is rated as the No, 1 receiver in the state, and visited Athens this past weekend, despite being committed to Auburn.

Patterson, who’s the No. 1 junior college prospect this year, visited Georgia during the weekend of Dec. 9.

He has also taken visits to Auburn, LSU, Mississippi, and Tennessee, and is expected to choose between those five on ESPN on Signing Day.

Josh Dawson, is another player the Bulldogs are interested in.

The outside linebacker prospect from Tucker will choose between Vanderbilt and Georgia around Signing Day.

South Florida tight end commitment Sean Price is set to visit Georgia this weekend, while Dalvin Tomlinson and Will Redmond are two other recruits to keep an eye on.

Tomlinson, a defensive end, has visited Athens multiple times, but Georgia Tech and Alabama are thought to be the front-runners for his services.

Redmond — who is being recruited as a safety — is committed to Mississippi State, but Georgia has come on strong on late.
