Georgia improves to 4-0 following victory over Missouri

By on January 27, 2012

The No. 6 Bulldogs (4-0) played a slow match against Missouri (0-2) — with the exception of Nadja Gilchrist.

While most matches lasted a while — Lauren Herring’s match went about an hour and a half — Gilchrist did away with Alex Clark in a quick match of 6-2, 6-3.

“I felt really happy,” Gilchrist said. “That girl, she was really good. But it’s always nice to get off the court really fast and get a quick win in for the team.”

Despite the length of her match, No. 52 Herring also won her match against Maria Christensen 6-2, 6-3 — a score that clinched the match 6-1.

“It was a great feeling, kind of like the first time I clinched a match this season,” she said. “It’s nice to get it out of the way so the other girls can just play freely.”

The Bulldogs began the match with an early lead by winning the doubles point.

The No. 2 pairing of Gilchrist and Chelsey Gullickson tore through its first doubles match, winning 8-1 against Nina Pantic and Rachel Stuhlmann — an improvement from their loss to Georgia Tech loss at 8-5.

“It felt really good,” Gilchrist said. “We were a little upset that we lost to Tech, but we came out to practice and knew we had to step our game up. We worked on a lot of things we hadn’t been working on at practice and got our confidence back up.”

The other pairs, however, had a more difficult time closing out their matches.

The second doubles match against Clark and Jamie Mera, played by No. 60 Kate Fuller and Herring, went to 5-0 out of the gates.

The score increased to 7-1 and, after a small struggle for the match’s momentum, the Bulldogs eventually ended the match with a strong overhead and a 8-3 win.

“We were in control the whole time — we were up and feeling confident,” Herring said. “We played maybe two sloppy games and they played a good game, but overall it was a good match.”

Lilly Kimbell and Maho Kowase, playing the third singles match against Christensen and Annemijn Koenen, were down 3-2 at the beginning of the match. They made a run from there, moving the score to 7-3, but the match was called at 7-4 as the Bulldogs had already won the doubles point.

No. 2 Gullickson finished her first singles match against Pantic 6-2, 7-5. She powered through the first set using her serve as a weapon — hitting aces, moving her opponent around the court and teeing off on returns.

Kimbell also generated a win in her sixth singles match with a strong showing in the first set. After a tough second set that she struggled to close, she trumped Koenen in a tiebreak, bring the score to 6-0, 7-6 (3).

No. 22 Kowase, who is still coming off an injury, did not contribute a win to the match, falling 3-6, 2-6 to Suhlmann.

“It’s always tough when you’ve had some injuries and missed a little bit of time,” Georgia head coach Jeff Wallace said. “She’ll be alright. She’s just got to keep working hard at practice. Those wins are coming.”

Fuller lost the first set of the fifth singles match 3-6 against Mera. However, she won the second set 6-3 and went on to win the super tiebreaker 10-8.

The Bulldogs will host Florida International University tomorrow at 2 p.m.

Pending a win, the Bulldogs will head to National Team Indoors.

“It’s my senior year, so it’s my last time I can go to National Team Indoors,” Gilchrist said. “I’m really excited to play tomorrow.”
