The ideal Advertising department candidate should be a hard-working self-starter. All reps must be customer service oriented and solution-minded with excellent organizational, communication, listening and time management skills. Top reps are courageous in their sales pitch and disciplined in their daily schedule. Exceptional Top reps show creativity in conceptualizing ads and ad campaigns for their clients, as well as proposing new sales initiatives and promotions to the department. Any student applying must be goal oriented and result driven in order to be successful in this sales role.

All hour requirements must be met during office hours, between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. Monday through Friday.

All applicants must be currently enrolled at The University of Georgia.

Account Executives for The Red & Black are responsible for providing high-level customer service and account management to a list of approximately 25-30 clients while also managing a territory to build relationships and interest with new businesses. A successful candidate is expected to make the same commitment to this position as any other career opportunity. All AEs begin as Sales Associates (description below) and constantly strive to meet bi-monthly individual sales goals. The position also requires the pursual of new business through effective territory prospecting and new business sales calls. AEs are expected to work a minimum of 20 hours per week and must have their own means of transportation. Most AEs work independently with monthly field checks from the Student Ad Manager and Ad Director. Account Executives are compensated by salary based upon sales performance, sales commission, and bonuses for reaching individual sales goals.

All students begin as Sales Associates during their training period. Sales Associates are responsible for successfully cold calling and prospecting new advertising business. SAs work to meet bi-monthly individual sales goals and if an SA meets their goals and shows excellent time management and organizational skills, that person is then eligible to become an Account Executive and will receive a client list or an assigned sales territory after a short period of proven performance. The position requires use of a car and working a minimum of 15 hours per week. Sales Associates work closely with the Student Ad Manager and Ad Director and are paid on a commission basis with bonus incentives for each two-week Sales By Objective period.

Advertising Interns have the opportunity to learn about the many aspects of newspaper advertising sales. Interns shadow Account Executives and assist them in completing their various responsibilities. Advancement opportunities to Sales Associate and Account Executive positions are available for those who excel in the intern role. The application process for advancement involves an evaluation by the Account Executives with whom you worked and a sales presentation for the Student Advertising Manager and Ad Director. Interns are expected to work a minimum of 10 hours per week. The intern role is an unpaid position.

Advertising Assistant – (Download PDF Application)

Advertising Assistants are responsible for servicing, selling and maintaining accurate records of advertising orders throughout the department. Ad Assistants work to maintain the high level of service expected of an Account Executive. Ad Assistants handle all the national advertising that is reserved by national rep firms. They also handle other local and national accounts where an in-person contact is not necessary. Other responsibilities include telemarketing special sections, laying out the newspaper, updating databases, making follow-up phone calls to requests for advertising information, organizing departmental emails, and sending our monthly newsletter. Ad Assistants are expected to work approximately 20 hours per week in either a morning or afternoon shift that lasts approximately four hours. Ad Assistants are compensated as an hourly employee.

Classified Manager – (Download PDF Application)

The Classified Manager is responsible for overseeing the smooth function and operation of The Red & Black’s classified page and the advertising within it. The Classified Manager must maintain a high level of service with each of our clients. The manager will handle all classified correspondence, billing, and ad input for publishing in the classified section of the newspaper, as well as designing special sections to boost classified revenue. The Classified Manager is expected to bring in new business through telemarketing and work closely with the Production and Business Departments to ensure that ads are accurate and that publication of the classified page goes smoothly each day. The position requires working approximately 20 hours per week. The Classified Manager is compensated as an hourly employee.

Classified Intern – (Download PDF Application)

The Classified Intern assists the Classified Manager with his/her daily responsibilities. These include calling back customers to verify information needed to run an ad, contacting customers whose ads have expired, selling new classified business and other clerical duties. This is a non-paid position and requires working approximately 10 hours per week.
