Police found a University of Georgia student dead in Vandiver Hall Tuesday night, according to UGA police chief Jimmy Williamson.
Police identified the student as David Peacock Braun of Marietta, Williamson said, who released his name Wednesday morning.
No other information about Braun was released.
After arriving on the scene, police found a locked door to the suitemate's room and went in using a key. Police found one dead body.
Williamson held a press conference later Tuesday night and said no foul play was involved in the student's death, but he did not specify the cause of death or go into anymore details.
"There is nothing preliminary for us to think there is any foul play involved, but right now it's too early for us to try to talk about any cause of death," Williamson said.
The deceased student's suitemate Tevin Reeves said he alerted housing officials when he had not seen his roommate since Friday or Saturday.
"I was the one that basically found this, found out," Reeves said. "You know what I’m saying, I knew something was wrong."
Reeves was concerned when he smelled something coming from his roommate's room.
"I basically just told them that the room has been smelling up for the past couple of days. We ain’t seen him, his lights been on, so it was smelling really bad so just bring somebody over and check it out," Reeves said.
Police responded to the scene at about 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, police said.
Reeves said he does not know any circumstances surrounding his roommate's death.
"I don't know anything, he was just a quiet dude, so I don’t really know much about it," Reeves said.
Braun is listed as a member of an outdoor intramural soccer team, according to the UGA Recreational Sports website, but The Red & Black has not been able to independently confirm this detail.
Residents of the Vandiver Hall reported seeing Georgia Bureau of Investigation, a coroner and police in the building Tuesday night.
The student's body is being taken to the GBI crime lab in DeKalb County.
No other details about the incident have been released at this time. Check back at The Red & Black for more updates.
