The construction company serving as the general contractor for the parking deck that collapsed in Atlanta Monday is the same contractor building two parking decks at the University slated to be ready in the fall semester.

Hardin Construction Company is building the deck under construction at the intramural fields and a deck near the Performing Arts Center. The 162,000-square-foot deck with 488-spaces located at the intramural fields will serve commuting students, while the other deck, with 152,000 square feet and 445 spaces, will serve the arts center.

Monday's collapse was not the only mishap Hardin has faced recently. The Atlanta company was fined $6,300 as one of the groups that worked on a pedestrian bridge at the Atlanta Botanical Garden which collapsed in December, killing one worker and injuring 18.

On Monday, part of a six-floor parking deck near downtown Atlanta collapsed crushing at least 35 cars. There were no immediate reports of injuries, though firefighters were waiting for the building to be stabilized before doing a car-to-car search.

J.P. Spillane, Atlanta police assistant commander of the zone where the deck is located, said there were signs of bolts popping on the other side and he was worried about "the entire soundness of the structure."

About 50 firefighters rushed to the deck near the Georgia Tech campus following the 12:32 p.m. collapse and Fire Chief Kevin Cochran said hours later it was "miraculous" there were no reports of injuries.

This is pretty scary.

I won't be parking there, especially after two major cases of the infrastructure collapsing. The parking deck in Atlanta could have been seriously deadly, but thankfully no one was there. (Continued…)

Come on UGA, read the handwriting on the wall. We don't need an incident like this in Athens. PLEASE outsource this project to someone else!

They also built the bridge at the Botanical Gardens in Atlanta that collapsed and killed one person. Hopefully nothing will happen here.

Hardin Construction uses GA. Tech engineers and this parking deck was supposed to be the one constructed at U. of GA. but apparently a mistake was made. (Continued…)

I will definitely be parking in a parking lot this fall.
