Best of luck to the Redcoats... but in all honesty, our band really isn't that great. I hate to say it.

Obviously, Olive, you know nothing about music. Have you ever stopped and actually listened to them? I've heard many, many bands in the past, and the Redcoats are one of the best. I don't think the US-China Cultural foundation would have paid millions for them to perform in China for 2 weeks if they weren't "that great".

Hey Olive - Go back to your hole. With all the work the band puts in, all you can do is dis them. You are a piece of sh**.

Why are they still calling them the "Redcoat" Band. That offends me as my ancestors fought against the "Redcoats"! How insensitive can the University continue to be ?

Seems to me that your ancestors must have done well against the English since you have the opportunity to complain some 200+ years later about a band that wears RED COATS. Pick your battles, Jim. This isn't it.

Make UGA proud, Redcoat Marching Band. Make UGA proud.

What do you want to call them - the University of Georgia Black Pants Band???? Numbskull.

Do you want to know why the Redcoats are called "Redcoats"?

Redcoats have worn red jackets as a part of the uniform since the creation of the band. During a joint concert between the UGA and GT bands, an AJC reporter referred to the GT band as "the yellow-jacketed band" and the UGA band as the "Red-coated band". This was in 1955.

I agree with LJS. It used to be the "Dixie Redcoat Marching Band." they dropped Dixie to be more PC in the 90's. There's not much left to drop after that.

Go Dawgs, and good luck. I'll be voting for you!

Try 1969, during integration in the South, when it took a lot more courage for Roger Dancz to take a principled stand to drop "Dixie" from the band's name (drawing death threats for his trouble) than it did for ignorant message board commenters to attribute it incorrectly to 90s-style "political correctness".

I don't really understand why "Dixie" is so non-PC...
it's a geographical region, do we really all have to pretend we're not from the south?

Wow...the appreciation for all the hard work the band does really does shine out in these comments. I can't imagine a day at Sanford Stadium, or any away team's stadium for that matter, without the Redcoats. Any Redcoats reading this should know there are ALOT of people who love what you do and don't consider you a joke. Best of luck!

To LizA and LJS:

You both are a "little slow" at humor. That was my point.

It used to be called the "The Dixie Redcoat Marching Band" when I was there.

Dixie was supposedly offensive - so it was dropped.
Marching was offensive (too military) - dropped.
Band is too offensive (ancestors killed by Indians) - please drop.
Redcoat too offensive (ancestors killed by British)- please drop.

They should be known as "The" until that offends someone........and in our politically correct society it soon will.

Jim/James - whomever you choose to be at this moment in your politically correct world,

Consider how the written word is perceived when writing what you claim to be "humor" comments. No tone, no voice inflection, no facial expressions. All Liza and I saw was the mark of an idiot who wanted to be negative about our Marching Band, not positive.

Bear that in mind with any future comments you may choose to post. And if you take this as I'm being condescending, you'd be very much "politically" correct.

FYI The Redcoats are one of the premier bands in the college football scene. They're only second in the SEC (some say) to LSU. Olive, try going to any other school's football game and you'll notice the difference Redcoats make. Even Richt touts them every chance he gets because he knows what the band does for the spirit of the game.

Yes, and whom do you think Richt comes to thank at the end of every game, even if he has to push through the entirety of the opposing football team and company? ...the Redcoats.

You can have football without a marching band. But not a football game. Not SEC football. And certainly not UGA football!

The Redcoats are an integral part of Game Day at UGA. They are truly the Heart of the Bulldog Spirit.

But I guess OLIVE would say UGA VII isn't that great a dog either.

If you can't appreciate the pageantry, tradition, and dedication of the Redcoats, I hope you don't waste a good student ticket by attending the games. Give your ticket to a real fan.

The Dixie Red Coat Band is indeed a fine band.I've also seen Michigan, Michigan State and Ohio State bands in person. These are also fine bands, just two different styles between the SEC and Big Ten. The MICH Drum Major does not and can not direct, he just prances around.
In the SEC, the Drum Majors can actully direct...

Olive, if you're trying to find another school to go to to check out how integral their marching band is, come out to LA and see the Spirit of Troy. Then you can REALLY see how a marching band is supposed to be.

I'm outraged at some of these comments! The Redcoats are great and keep the spirit of the games alive. I think these comments poorly reflect the majority of the students' opinions--most of us respect and fully support the band! GOOD LUCK ON FRIDAY!!!

I have watched the hard work and sacrifice that the Redcoats put in to their shows, including 100 degree training camps, hours of public and private practice, and many are not even Music Majors!

Count me as one proud Redcoat Dad!

Step Off, haters!

Thanks to everyone for your support and help! We can't pull this off without you.

They were just another victim of "politically correct" idiots.

I still say "Dixie Redcoat Band".

But then, I'm' opposed to all the left-wing BS. I wish all of us UGA supporters would tell them how much we were offended by the change of name.
