Those Gainseville State kids are always pretending that they go here.

I wish those bozos would just keep to themselves.

I wonder what the object of the game was. Suppose the sorority had accepted her -- what then?

The police are doubtless concerned about whether there was more identity theft going on than just this one incident.

Uh.... that's what the story says, bozo. Ashley Williams. The only Kelly mentioned was the victim...

well, not really...

Actually, the print version does give the name as Kelly Williams, and they have changed the online version.

I've heard of this actually happening before on two different occasions...once in a sorority and a fraternity. In both cases, the perpetrators were not currently attending any college but posed as UGA students. I'm glad someone got seriously caught.

There are alot of innocent victims in this situation. How sad for everyone affected. I don't see how she thought she could get away with it but she certainly had many people fooled and several of them suffered as a result of their association with her during rush. It appears that no one who met Ashley recently had any idea of her deception.

This situation is unfortunate. There are a few things I would like to clear up. Thouugh I did note that the parents were hesitant to press charges, this situation is a felony and a citizen cannot swear out a felony warrant. Also, the Pan-Hellenic Staff notified Ms. Hall of the incident, I simply took the report. Nice job for the most part on the story though.

Ok, this situation is very unfortunate. But who are any of you to judge this girl that you dont even know. Are you better than her because you go to UGA, or you are in a sorority/fraternity? No. This girl, who i have personally grown up with,
has been through more than any of you can imagine, did you consider that when you made your judgements? No. It was wrong and she knows it, and will suffer the consequences. There is no point in dragging her down any more than she already is.

Are we better than her because we go to UGA? Yes, by academic standards we are much better than her, hence the reason she doesn't go here.

Are we better than her because we're in a fraternity or sorority? Well according to her opinion we must be. She would have to give Greeks some elevated status in order to go to such deceptive means to try and fit in as one of them. Technically we're not better, but she certainly thinks we are.

If she knew it was wrong, why did she do it? Guilt tripping people over the internet is kind of pointless. Facts are facts she did something wrong. Not only that she did something stupid. I don't care what she's "been through" we've all been through things. However, we all don't pretend to be a UGA student to try and get into a sorority.

Its becoming a common occurrance that Gainesville State students from the Oconee Campus pretend to go to school at UGA. They tell people they "go to school in Athens", crash UGA functions, and apparently try and bid for our sororities.

Ashley is one of the most kind and caring people I have ever met and I know that when she was doing this she didnt realize the people she was hurting or the problems she was causing for herself. & for those of you that think you're better because you attend UGA... you're completely wrong. You're comment proves that fact.

You really actually missed the point Quick2Judge was trying to make. She was stating that Ashley herself is the one that will be suffering the consequences, and you arent one of the people to enforce them. & the comment you made about academic standards. I know QUITE a few dumba**es that go to UGA. Just because a student attends gainesville doesn't mean they arent as smart or have worse grades. It isnt you're place to punish a girl for her actions. Have an opinion...don't enforce it publicly in a negative way. You need to grow up.

You're = a contraction of the words "you" and "are"
Ex. You're a moron if you don't know the difference between "you're" and "your".

Your = a possessive form of the term you.
Ex. Your inability to effectively use the English language makes me cringe.

If you're going to try and demean someone for thinking they're smarter than you, don't prove them right by looking like a moron.

By no means am I stating that what she did is okay. My point is that she knows it's wrong & she doesn't need you reminding her, nor is it your place. Yes, I know people will judge her for this, but you could remain mature about it and keep your judgements to yourself. You're in college and you have already stated that you think you're better because you go to UGA, so act like the bigger person.

Sadly, this is a situation where yet another young person apparently was not comfortable in her "own skin." Nothing can justify what she did and I suspect she more than anyone realizes how wrong it was and what it cost her. As I understand it she had a very nice life going for her in her make-believe world in Athens. But that is the sad thing - it was all make believe. I pray that her parents see her calling out for help and get her the professional help she so badly needs. I would imagine she was only interested in doing whatever her friends were doing at the time and got caught up in the excitement of their enthusiasm. Surely she did not mean to inflict the pain she has caused on anyone. It is sad to see how fragile some people truly are. I would hope everyone sees the tragedy in this situation. Hopefully the unintended consequences for the innocent friends who were brought into this through her very skillful deception will be minimized. Most importantly, let's hope that she gets the professional help she needs to become comfortable with who she really is. Hats off to those who have not rushed to judgement about the people who were fooled by her deception. As I understand it there were quite a few and they are still reeling from the shock of this news and its consequences.

Woah... you must be this Ashley girl. I've got to say you're really good at pretending to be a lot of people, I think you've actually got half the comments on this article now. Way to not let an arrest for identity fraud stop you from your haberdashery.

I say this, because your pitiful grammar is a dead giveaway that you don't go to the University of Georgia and are probably making a place like Gainesville State home. Your 4th grade English teacher would be disappointed to learn that you're making such a mockery of skills you should have learned in her class.

Again... way to really chase your dreams! Keep fighting the man and pretending to be other people!

This is a sad story that seemed to bring out the worst in some of the commentators. Ashley is a young lady who requires our sympathy not our condemnation. Sadder than Ashley's need to live in a world totally of her own making, is some of the cruel and heartless comments posted here. I know that many of you are young and tend to see either black or white, good or evil. Your simplistic views of events do not allow you to see the many shades of gray, nor the spectrum of good and evil. Your lack of compassion tells me that you too have some unresolved issues. I hope that along with the fine education you can receive at UGA you will also become more humane and less judgemental. I also hope that you and your loved ones now and in the future never commit a crime to fit in, find comfort, or feel accepted by your peers. I hope you are always secure, loved, and have a healthy level of self-esteem. You are fortunate to have been accepted into Georgia's flagship institution of higher education, now show that you are worthy of the honor by exhibiting humility, compassion, and maturity. Good luck to all of you. Life is nothing like the wonderful four (or five or even six) years you will spend up here.

I read this article and was surprised by it and the comments. I do not currently go to UGA, but I did graduate from there last year. I did not join a sorority, but I know plenty who did. Therefore, this should have nothing to do with my maturity or immaturity or Greek status. I'm sorry for all of you free spirits out there who think when people do things wrong, you should sympathize with them. What if our justice system worked like that? Someone is up for murder and the jury says, "I'm sorry you had a rough childhood. You're innocent." I know that is extreme, but it is still my point. I'm sorry, but a lot of people have been through a lot and go through life completely fine. There are other ways of dealing with your problems. I know that not everybody has the resources, but you can't excuse everybody with the reason "they have been through a lot." There are others who have been through life and unfortunately, can not handle what life gives them and they have to deal with the consequences. By the way, I'm going to add one smart ass remark. People go to GSU when they can't get into UGA, so yes, UGA does have higher standards...duh.

Firstly, I would like to say thank you to those individuals who pointed out the obvious grammar flaws from the previous threads.

Students who were accepted into UGA worked diligently in their classes and more than likely contributed countless hours in extracurricular or co-curricular activities. Being accepted to UGA is an honor considering the university's countless awards and rankings. Posing as a UGA student is disrespectful to the students that deserve to be there. When students from GSU portray themselves as UGA students, it detracts from the prestige of the University of Georgia. If a student wishes to attend UGA, then he or she should put in the work to be accepted.

Cruel and heartless comments? Mistake? Identity theft is not a "mistake". It took "Miss Williams" (quotes since I can't really consider her a lady) time, thought and effort to commit this "mistake" which is also known as a CRIME! Claire Derr, if it were your identity that were stolen, do you truly believe that you be as kind with your comments? Highly doubtful. You are right, however, about our "unresolved issues". Our issues are those that stem from having community college students interfere with our educational experiences. The social events, organizations, parties, etc are rewards and advantages that are reserved for STUDENTS of UGA! Students that put in the effort to be accepted. Students that chose the correct path of hard work over delinquency. We are defending the "flagship institution of higher education" and showing that we are worthy by speaking-up in the university's defense. I will say there are indeed many shades of gray in many life situations. Miss Williams obviously has deep psychological issues that she needs to address. Her lack of self-esteem or what have you is a reason for her behavior; however, her issues in no way justify or excuse her illegal actions. Perhaps she should have gone to ITT Tech instead.

Lastly, there are many students at community colleges that are just as good as those at Ivy League schools. Life takes a different direction for everyone. Actions such as Miss William's disrespects those individuals truly making at effort at all smaller schools including GSU. Williams is making all of their students look even worse. Those of you who are defending her probably go to GSU. Don't you realize that her actions are making you look worse? Like another little tart at a community college that will get knocked up within her freshman year? Or a hoodlum that will end up hustling, having several baby mammas? Hello!?!? Defend yourself! Show everyone, if it is indeed true, that community college students are just as good as others. Until then, please stop responding to the independent newspaper of which school.....oh yeah....UGA....NOT GSU!

haha, honey, i know there are lots of community collegers that are just as intelligent as some ivy leaguers, but you have to also realize that there are more than just a few uga students who might not necessarily deserve the automatic respect given to uga students. for instance, i know a good number of people who graduated from my high school with no extracurriculars, damn awful grades, and a just slightly decent sat score (i'm talking 1200's on the old scale). just because you go to uga does not by any means make you as special as you think you are.

wow. amen! UGA is NOT ivy league nor anywhere near it. I say this as someone that does attend a school that is top-ranked. not to mention academia does not define a person.

So here are the facts:

A student from GSU stole a UGA student's identification - Felony identity theft.

Whether or not she "realized what she was doing" is not the issue. There's really no way to not realize that you're stealing someone's identification.

The bottom line is this: the student broke the law, not to mention morals, and got caught. All of you who will tell me that I'm a horrible person for being insensitive are probably right, because I don't know Miss Williams, and therefore have no emotional sensitivity attached to the subject.

Thank you for summarizing, in one sentence, why the Internet is a putrid cesspool of bile that serves as the reason why we can't have nice things. Like empathy.

God, I hate humanity.
