Coach, let's have a heart-to-heart

Abstract:
Since 1966, I've been buying Georgia Bulldogs tickets. As a student, I stood in the rain to watch us whip the Gators 51-0. Steve Spurrier hasn't forgotten, and he's been paying us back ever since. Our children spent fall Saturdays in Sanford Stadium listening to Larry Munson growl, "There goes Herschel! There goes Herschel!" And we hadn't given up when Buck hit Lindsay with that glorious pass in Jacksonville....

"Dink" -

We beat Florida 51-0 in 1968. I believe Steve Spurrier graduated from Florida in 1966, so I'm not sure what he has to do with it other than being an alumnus of UF.

While the Dawgs have problems right now, a patronizing article such as this wont't get things done regardless. But hey, whatever makes you feel more important.

Dink, we need to talk. Here's the conversation we should have: "Dink, we laid an egg against Tennessee; it happens. Remember home and away with Florida? Remember our helplessness against the Auburn teams of the mid to late 80's? Remember the Goff years? Things are different now and you know it. So UT took us to the woodshed... unfortunately that's going to happen every now and then. The program is heading in the right direction. If you perceive things to be this bad, find another hobby. Go build a Habitat House. Pitch in at a soup kitchen. Travel... do something, but stop your belly aching. Dawg Fans don't want to hear it."

This sounds a lot like Steinbrenner. Since you can buy championships and all. I'm sorry that two SEC championships isn't paying off your investment. Maybe a better idea would be to send this to the players on those championship teams and explain to them how their hard work didn't pay off on YOUR investment. This letter is distasteful and embarassing, and probably nothing turns away future bulldogs more than this attitude. I'm thankful for Coach Richt and his players. They work hard every day. Maybe Dink should coach a week. Better yet, since he was in the stands during the mentioned Florida game, he should have eligibility left. Therefore, strap a helmet on if you can do better.

His points are well made, and I believe with good intentions. He has paid his dues and has proven his loyalty and support to our beloved Bulldogs. As a student on his feet in the heat of the student section every game from start to finish I must admit - It's not the same. I remember my first game, watching David Greene and company, I remember the noise meter - We were louder than a jet engine! Where's that electricity now? Fans should pick up the team when we're down and keep momentum when we're up. We are the twelfth man. We shouldn't "boo" our own dawgs! Sanford stadium CAN be the most hostile nightmare for visiting teams, the Bulldog Nation still bleeds red and black!

See you in Nashville.

Dink - Get a life. Your whining is pathetic. And your silly pay scheme is an absolute joke. You think that would make Mark Richt try harder? Then you don't understand Mark Richt. Let's lick our wounds, support our Dawgs, and stop the whining.

I agree with Dink. Our team has not had intensity, especially on defense, in a long time. It starts with Willie Martinez and his bend but don't break defense. That has to be the worst philosophy for a defense. Instead of dropping everyone back 15 yards at the snap, we should be blitzing linebackers and or safeties more often. What is the one thing all great defenses have in common? They get after the quarterback and strike fear into the hearts of the entire offense. Our defensive scheme doesn't do that and that is exactly what Dink was talking about. I am glad he said what he did because many people were thinking it.

"As a man, husband, father and coach, Mark Richt is the gold standard. But..."

But you should have stopped there. I'll bet this guy felt the lemmings would be falling all over themselves to give him kudos.

What a bozo. There was only one Herschel and Erk is dead. UGA hasn't even sniffed the success that it has had in the past 5-6 years.

Heart to heart, please - how 'bout this heart to heart:

Bozo: Coach...
Coach: Uh, before you start, I have some sad news - I'm heading to FSU/Miami/or some other program that has more prestigious success (if you take your red & black blinders off).

Trust, it's not like he is not wanted and for GOOD reason. Weasels like this are a big problem with society today (let alone college football).

Dink,
"Defense is ALL about emotion." That is one of the most ridiculous things I have ever heard. Enough said.

In his first 6 years in the SEC CMR has won 2 SEC titles, 3 East titles, 1 BCS Bowl, 2 BCS Bowl appearances. I guess thats just not good enough.

Yes, this past saturday was the worst saturday under CMR's tenure, but that is the first and only time UGA has been like that since he took over and UGA has been on the other side of that many more times.

Vandy and Kentucky are not the same Vandy and Kentucky they used to be. They were solid footballs teams, UGA absolutely would have won had Coutu not gotten hurt (no if's there, thats fact) and the defense gave up game winning drives in both games.

Funny how Erk is the one how triggered the defense back then, but now it's the head coaches fault instead of the D Coordinator's.

If Evans and Adams have a brain at all, CMR will not leave UGA until he retires

Dink-
Thank you for shaming the University of Georgia. While you are at it with your "money talks" mentality, why don't you go buy some Trans Ams for the players like they used to do and shame us even more.

As much as I hate to take our coaching staff to the woodshed, I don't mind seeing that UT has done it twice now in two years....

What is are the two differences between us and programs like Florida and LSU? Its not the recruits, we get recruiting classes that are just as good and loaded with just as much talent. The first difference is that we play for SEC titles and find ourselves incredibly content with going 10-2 record while LSU and UF play for National Titles.... and 12-0 records. Secondly, UF and LSU don't have "rebuilding years" (a term we like to use every 2 seasons). UF lost almost all of its defense this season, but has looked just as good as last season. In what could be called LSU's "rebuilding year" last season, they went 10-2 and destroyed Notre Dame. In our "rebuilding year" we head to the Chick-fil-A Bowl...

People tend to forget that Georgia was a GREAT program, especially in the 1980s. The trademark of that was a hard-nosed style of football (hence the nickname of Junkyard Dawgs). WE DON'T HAVE THAT ANY MORE. This team gets hit in the mouth once or twice then packs it up and goes home, its simply unacceptable.

We should never lose in that manner to anyone, especially a hated opponent like Tennessee. We should not slug along like we did against Mississippi State and Ole Miss last season. Most of all, we shouldn't lose to teams like Kentucky, South Carolina, and Vanderbilt. 7 straight SEC East losses is embarassing and unacceptable. Its high time someone gets held accountable for it.

I'm not saying to fire Mark Richt, although now that he no longer has Jim Donnan's players, he hasn't proven to be an excellent head coach... I'm saying shake things up, re-hire Brian Van Gorder, or somebody with the cajones to fire up our D. On the offensive side of the ball, find us an offensive coordinator who isn't afraid to be agressive with his play calling and can make Matthew Stafford resemble a decent QB.

The Goff years were terrible, Donnan was a little better, Richt has helped us a lot, but he is not our next Vince Dooley. We either need a coaching staff that will make this team perrenial national title contenders or find us a new head coach who will do it. We've got the players.... only one thing is missing.

Thank you Dink... someone had to have the gravitas to step up and call out Coach Richt and this pitiful team.

Guys, that fact is this. The dogs are a high powered, high talent team, but their performance this year is a joke! Tenn was a catasrophy. we didnt even show up, and what the hell is Bobo thinking with all those 5 yard slant passes and hand offs up the middle? they should have been throwing bombs since the 2nd quarter, open up the feild and throw the damn ball. and what the hell is with all the dropped balls? i dont even want to talk about Vandy cause we squeeked through that one. fla is going to be a nightmare this year. maybe we can show up for that game. then again, im not gonna hold my breath.

What a Whiner

My! My! What whiners we have become! Or to quote Realistic Individual "he (Richt) is not our next Vince Dooley". AND THANK GOD FOR THAT. Let's look at the facts.

Through 6 seasons (1964 to 1969), Vince's record was 43-18-5, for a whopping 65% winning percentage. CAN YOU IMAGINE THE WHINING IF RICHT HAD THAT RECORD? Vince had won two SEC titles, but he wouldn't win another one for seven years (1976). And in Vince's seventh season, he posted a 5 and 5 record.

Richt's first 6 seasons produced a record of 61-17, for a 78% winning percentage. And two SEC titles as well. And his five wins in 2007 are as many as Vince had in all of his seventh season.

We all hate losing. But all this whining is ridiculous.

And one more thing. That part about "Georgia was a GREAT program, especially in the 80's". Yes - we had three exceptional years with Herschel - no doubt about it. But Dooley's 80's stretched from 1980 to 1988. Know what our record was?????? 83-21-4. We won 76.9% of our games. Know what Richt's winning percentage is?? 78.2%.

Facts are wonderful things. We should try them more often.

Which would you rather have? A hard fought, left everything on the field loss or a half-assed only played decent in the second half win?

What we're talking about is not a win-loss record. I don't follow the Dawgs for their record. I follow them in the hopes they will play their hearts out. Win, lose or draw, I follow the Dawgs. It is disheartening to watch your team do only enough to win so we can hang our hats on our record. Sometimes the amount required to win is miscalculated.

We're missing fundamentals and it shows when defensive linemen are wrapped up in a block while the ball goes right by them and they don't even turn their heads. I saw it in the Tenn. game big time and again in the 1st half against Vandy.

I'm proud of our players that have had problems early on and have worked hard to fix the problem. Tripp Chandler deserves all the Kudos in my book. He is proving that he cares and is doing his best. What an improvement!

Knowshon Moreno shows every game what the right attitude is and he leaves it all on the field.

Doing their best is what I want to see from everyone top to bottom and I think Dink is trying say that.

What a Whiner

Since you asked, I'd rather have the win.

But I think Vince Lombardi said that a long time ago.

And that's not at all what Dink said. In fact he proposed paying the coach based on Win First, Then Get Paid.

I still say all this whining is silly. Go Dawgs!

Yes he has delivered 2 SEC Championships. Any National Titles? Any? Georgia has been in the drivers seat to win one in 2003 and 2004. All to choke it down the stretch by losing to Florida and Auburn. Urban Meyer won a national title in his first year at Florida right? IMO, I see others like LSU, Florida, and Tennessee getting better and UGA in a holding pattern. What's the problem? Oh, when will UGA beat Florida again?
