Never coming home again?

Abstract:
My big brother Matt always left the toilet seat up. The disgusting plastic bottles he used to spit tobacco were all over the house. We ran to our mother with our arguments - both adults yet still pushing and shoving like toddlers. Matt brought out the fire and claws in me - all good big brothers do, I suppose....

I pray that your brother comes back to you safely, and you always remember how much he means to you.

I think that we often forget that the soldiers are only a portion of those who sacrifice for their country, and I have found that they spend more time worrying about their families than about the possibility of death.

What a great article. God bless you.

Just in case you have never seen this:

IT IS THE SOLDIER

It is the Soldier, not the minister
Who has given us freedom of religion. It is the Soldier, not the reporter
Who has given us freedom of the press. It is the Soldier, not the poet
Who has given us freedom of speech. It is the Soldier, not the campus organizer
Who has given us freedom to protest. It is the Soldier, not the lawyer
Who has given us the right to a fair trial. It is the Soldier, not the politician
Who has given us the right to vote.It is the Soldier who salutes the flag,
Who serves beneath the flag,
And whose coffin is draped by the flag,
Who allows the protester to burn the flag.

Wow, did you get that from a forward your Mom sent you?
You're probably going to Hell, just so you know. Not because of your beliefs, but moreover because your lack of consideration for anyone but yourself.

The soldier has historically suppressed all those things

Please do not ruin a great quote ever again.

"It is the soldier, not the reporter,
Who has given us freedom of the press.
It is the soldier, not the poet,
Who has given us freedom of speech.
It is the soldier, not the campus organizer,
Who has given us the freedom to demonstrate.

Who salutes the flag,
Who serves beneath the flag,
And whose coffin is draped by the flag,
Who allows the protester to burn the flag."

I've been in your situation with my brother as well and this article seriously made me cry, thank God, my brother made it back home this past year. Just keep praying, its the only thing that'll make it better.

I think it's great you're writing about something worthwhile. It's an insult to all us veterans when the Red and Black does a front page story about pageants and yet does absolutely nothing to pay tribute to the uncountable service members who never made it home in November 11th's (Veteran's Day!!!) newspaper. I pray your brother comes back safely.

You are a sad case ....... but I think you already know that.

"Every man thinks meanly of himself for not having been a soldier, or not having been at sea." Samuel Johnson (1709-1784).

"For those who fought for it, freedom has a flavor the protected (that's you Earl) will never know."

You are protected and kept free by better men than yourself.

And no, my dear mother did not forward this to me.

Anyone else have a problem with chest-beating veterans? Not all the veterans...I mean the ones who do their duty then come over asking for everything from everyone because "I DEFENDED YER FREEDOMS!"

Yea I mean if they are legitimately doing that then sure it's annoying. Even more douchey is people like you though that would actually say something about it. You can be an asshole no matter what side you're on...

This is by far the best article I have ever read in the Red and Black. I read it while waiting for class this morning and it brought tears to my eyes. I think I speak for most people when I say we often get so consumed in our daily lives that we sometimes forget to remember those who put their lives on the line. I pray your brother returns home safely to you and you family. I also say a special prayer for all of our soldiers abroad and at home who put their lives on the line for country.

Wow, Mandi! Thanks for sharing this. Your writing continues to amaze me, friend. I'm really proud of you and know you have a great future in our business. I will be praying for your brother and your family and all the soldiers and their families. I was all but paralyzed with fear for many days when my brother served in Iraq for 11 months. And there were other days where it would completely leave my mind. Your column brought back all those feelings of hope and hopelessness. Damn, girl. Good job!

There's no draft. No one is forced to become a soldier. If you choose this line of work, there's a risk of death, it comes with the territory.
Soldiers don't protect our "freedoms". In this case, soldiers have killed tens of thousands of innocents in wars based on the lies of Bush and his cronies. These wars are costing us hundreds of billions, and don't actually achieve anything useful for us as Americans. On the contrary, they have caused the entire world to despise the USA.
So enough of this smarmy, sentimental bullshit about soldiers protecting us, etc.
Volunteering for the US military is not a choice a moral person would make. US policies and the actions of the US military create significant financial and moral burdens for every American.

Regardless of your beliefs about the war(s), if you had a sibling or another loved one halfway around the world who could be killed at any time I am pretty sure you would worry as well. Don't be an asshole.
