Mental wellness deserves attention

Abstract:
With January comes a slew of New Year's resolutions, visible in packed gyms and sidewalks clogged with joggers.

Though many students openly are trying to improve their physical health, few so frankly talk about the importance of mental health.

There are a variety of options for students seeking counseling on and off campus that meet a range of needs....

The effects of alcohol on the brain are well known. Here is a summary from a Scientific American Article July 29, 1999 by Anthony Dekker D.O.
"Under the influence of alcohol, the brain experiences impairments in the regions shown:
Frontal Lobe (A): Loss of reason, caution, inhibitions, sociability, talkativeness and intelligence.
Parietal Lobe (B): Loss of fine motor skills, slower reaction time, shaking.
Temporal Lobe (C): Slurred speech, impaired hearing.
Occipital Lobe (D): Blurred vision, poor distance judgement.
Cerebellum (E): Lack of muscle cooordination and balance.
Brain Stem (F): Loss of vital functions."
At high levels, alcohol "becomes a vasoconstrictor, shrinkinthe vessels and increasing blood pressure, exacerbting such conditions as migraine headaches and frostbite. Researchers have also thoroughly documented the effects of alcohol on the developing fetus. Approximately one third of all babies born to alcoholic mothers will develop Fetal Alcohol Syndrome or Effects (FAS or FAE), causing central nervious system (CNS) disfunctions including Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD) and impaired IQ. There are also growth and facial abnormalities associated with these infants."
In other words, since most of the administrators and faculty at UGA either already know or should know the above well known information, why do not all of them seek to discourage students from imbibing alcohol daily at the hundreds of bars on Broad St or purchasing it at the various liquor and beer stores around the county? And why would a Regent be appointed who operates a wholesale liquor business? Is not the most basic function of a university to develop brain function and develop critical abilities? And what about the fundamental duty of the Athens "Unified" Government to the "health, safety and welfare" of its citizens? Yet all these "leaders" seem to look the other way with alcohol, which is all around us and damaging even unborn, innocent children every day. In fact, this could be the prime reason for the difficulties and failures of the local public schools.
Obviously there is no shortage of hypocrisy at UGA among the "professors" and "administrators" or in the local athens government among the Mayor and Commissioners is there? Let's have another referendum and shut down all these unnecessary brain damaging establishments.

Though I agree that counseling helps a great deal, especially if you no one to talk to I still think the best thing we can do to keep our mental health is nourish our bodies with the nutrients it craves. For example for mental wellness it has long been established that higher intakes of Omega 3 (which contains DHA) leads to optimum mental health. It's also been pointed out that there are lower rates of major depression in societies that consume large amounts of fish, a key dietary source of DHA. I know the product I take Neurovi's Omega 3 has one of the highest if not the highest ratios of DHA to EPA which if taken too much of can lead to blood thinning and upset stomach. Oh btw, they are still having the promotion I used.. enter "gift of health" for 12% off your order; but it's already a low price so that just seemed to help some.

Students can be under a lot of stress and pressure, especially during sessions.

Students need the educational system to be changed. The problem is that nowadays, money have not been invested in education. There are a lot of new successful techniques that could improve the educational system, but I don't see any of those being implemented. Why?

That is true most of my friends talk openly about physical health with their doctor but about mental health they usually hide it.

"It's important to emphasize that we don't turn students away who are in acute distress," I completely agree with this words!
