Porn star and pastor go head-to-head

Abstract:
Ron Jeremy, a porn star who has directed, produced and starred in more than 1,800 adult films, and Craig Gross, a pastor and founder of xxxchurch.com - a Web site promoting a religious view on pornography - squared off in a sold-out debate Tuesday night in the Georgia Hall at the Tate Center....

I would have really liked to have seen that debate, but I never heard one thing about it! Where was this advertised? Who cares if he is right or wrong, it would have been great to see Ron Jeremy, a legend in the porn world, debate, and try to defend the adult film industry.

Although it is easily understandable for people to condemn pornography based on differing personal or religious convictions, it is not there place to try and eliminate pornography altogether. Usage, interaction, or industry participation are all voluntary acts that each individual should have the right to accept or reject. Therefore, even those feeling degraded but continuing to associate themselves with the industry are simply not correctly using their rights as an American citizen. Perhaps garbage men feel they are degraded because their profession can lead to health issues and is typically not viewed as reputable or respectable. However, do these workers not have the same right to find employment elsewhere if the benefits do not outweigh their personal sacrifices? It shouldn't matter the industry or topic so long as personal rights are not infringed upon. Ron Jeremy, proudly a fellow brother of Tau Kappa Epsilon, could be representing any industry and still have a valid point; let individuals make their own decisions and do not infringe upon the rights of Americans to use or not use pornography.

If your statements were true, they would be valid. Unfortunately, there is a large element of the porn industry that includes INVOLUNTARY participants, ie children and others enslaved for their use. Read the Rolling Stone article on a similar subject from a few years ago, and pay attention to articles on sexual slavery IN THE US, what appears to be a child-pornography epidemic IN THIS COUNTRY, etc. Some pornography includes rape and murder. No one is forcing anyone to be a garbageman, etc. And no other industry can compare with one that affects a participant's body, mind, and soul.

The "University" of Georgia already does almost anything for money. They and/or their "professors" accept money from organizations like the American Cancer Society and/or they permit this organization to raise money on campus notwithstanding the many untoward, unethical and improper activities documented by Samuel S. Epstein, M.D. and others to have been committed by them but when administrators were requested to invite him to refute false and misleading statements by them, they refused. But Mr. Jeremy is welcomed.
Why not instruct these administrators how to convince the public to have a full blown whorehouse on campus. Why not, money is all the counts anyway is it not? There are no rules anymore, no scientific method rules, no scholarship rules, no intellectual freedom rules and no common sense anymore. Anything goes.

COUNTER ABBE ALERT

posted 2/14/08 @ 11:55 AM EST

Winfield J. Abbe has lost credibility with his former employer, University of Georgia, and has plenty of freetime to post anywhere and everywhere he can. Clearly he would not have earned tenure at UGA these days, and his pay would be justifiably low. He is interesting, however, even if erratic and annoying and prone to repeated self-citation. His major obsession (which is legitimate) concerns cancer treatment. He states that the war on cancer has been improperly waged by state and federal agencies, and drug companies, and believes earnestly that the research of Otto Warburg showed the way to effective treatment. For a succinct statement of Abbe's views and grudges, see his comment at http://www.npr.org/blogs/mycancer/2006/09/losing_someone_to_cancer.html . The main thing to know is that Abbe projects this singular grudge onto other perceived social, economic, or political abuses and seeks collateral targets in every instance (pornography and cancer? Puhleese). He berates state and federal agencies of any and everything, just because they are state and federal agencies. Those who do not take up his singular cause are deemed by him to be cretans. He's the uber cretan of Athens, GA.

It is true that some porn (not likely created by registered businesses) does have involuntary actors. Depictions of criminal acts on film are not tolerated in society. The reason the perpetrators get away with it is because the victims don't report it.
Child porn is vigorously investigated and police are making gains in tackling it.
It is shocking that despite the numerous legal pornography that is available, so many seem interested in images of children being raped.
If pornography should be banned because of instances of abuse of people, than so should religion. Pornography doesn't start wars, eliminate cultures, seek to justify genocide in it's texts. What religion and porn have in common, is that they have both abused little boys at some point or another.

Critics of porn always lump "mainstream" porn together with the "nasty" fringe porn (eg, child porn, violent porn). This obfuscates and twists the debate. I absolutely agree that we should try to prohibit and eliminate things like child porn. I always believe that the general negative attitude towards mainstream porn is based on our society's erotophobia, which is reflected in religious teachings.

Mainstream porn, such as the kind Ron Jeremy espouses, is good healthy fun. And sex *should* be fun! Never mind the silly pop psychology nonsense that critics spew about how sexually explicit films warp the mind, raise unrealistic expectations, etc., etc. We live in a sexually repressed (Christian) society.

actually all porm is degrading. everytime you look it up you see words like whore and slut and bitch and putting her in her face. or young slut sucking huge clock. it's discusting and people are influenced by it. And yes, it is easly accessed by minors. I am seventeen years old and I have been able to view it. It is discusting and it is degrading. whether it's violent or not you can always see in porn that the women is made to be the lesser being.

I dont see the big problem with porn, and I dont understand why people complain about it so much. Its a billion dollar industry and without it the world will not work correctly. If your not into porn reviews dont watch it!
