Your Facebook can hinder job chances

Abstract:
Ah, the Facebook profile - the college student mecca for socializing, career networking, poking and picture-posting. Well, you can add "career-staller" to that list, too. With the freedom of expression that comes with Internet outlets like Facebook and MySpace, you can broadcast your face and personality to the world - but expression that is too free can sideline you in the post-college job hunt....

As someone who has taught students here at UGA and seen my students facebook pages, it can shape your professor's view of you as well. Your drunken trysts or strange sexually-named groups you belong to show up for all to see. It didn't make me change my grades, but it did make me think there were more than just a few idiots in my class. And "friending" your professors is not a good idea...it just makes it easier for us to see every stupid thing you do online.

Have we not already seen this column before? Who didn't know employers could look at your profile on Facebook?

To me it seems more expedient to alter your Facebook privacy settings; make sure everything is friends-only. You can privatize your profile, your main picture, even whether or not your profile shows up on internal Facebook searches. Be careful who you friend, or at least use the "limited profile" settings for your sketchier contacts. These things will not only keep would-be employers out of your dirty laundry, but will cut down on the online stalker factor as well.

See, this is why I used LiveJournal - friends-locked, of course.

Also law enforcement can access your account with a subpoena(much easier to obtain than a search warrant). They can actually look at everything thats ever been a part of your profile, even pictures you have deleted.
I know for a fact that the UGA police use facebook all the time to find out about a suspect or a victim. Ive even heard of an officer who makes a DUI arrest going back to the station and printing out facebook pictures of the person drinking underage and giving it to the prosecutor.
Also if your using facebook on a work computer everything you look at is stored in the server and your work can see your whole profile, even things you deleted in some cases.

This is to JoAnn Anderson,
I am doing a story for a Fox 11 LA internship on how young adult's facebooks effect their jobs and job interviews. In your article you mentioned that you had a friend who had such an experience. If you have any interest in contacting me to set up an interview with your friend I would like to hear more about his/her story. To ensure this information, I can have the reporter whom I am working with at Fox 11 contact you. Please consider this.
Thank you for your time
