Face ridicule to fight racism

Abstract:
It started outside Sanford Stadium after the Georgia Tech letdown. A black Tech fan bumped into a white Georgia fan. "Watch your step," the Bulldog snarled. The Yellow Jacket responded, "Oh, are you upset? You should be!" Then, something a whole lot nastier than the idea of Willie Martinez sticking around for another year occurred....

I find it sad to think that a young person looking at our new President-Elect can only look forward to his possible impending death. Out of many, one, get it young man? America's greatness lies in its ability to adapt to change. Obviously "higher" education needs to take place in more than just our colleges and Universities.

"He said those were ways we tried to feel better about ourselves without ever really accomplishing anything, like the white kid blaring Tupac's "Changes" out of the windows of his Cadillac."

Or... say... the kid who writes an article in the newspaper about how he made fun of a redneck?

I've been amazed to hear the anti-Obama people crying out for his assassination. Are you hillbillies really that excited about having Al Qaeda-style terrorism replace the rule of law and democracy in America?

Kudos to Marc for refusing to let that filth pass unchallenged.

Great article. I had to endure some racist jokes over Thanksgiving made by parts of my family who have some very backward thinking and for the next few days just felt really sad...I wish I had said something instead of just casting my eyes to the floor. Maybe next time I will have the courage.

You're the same guy who referred to Obama supporters as Kool-Aid drinkers in an article not long ago...good to see you backtracking on your racist ways.

If this even occured...it seems like amore than a coincidence this just so happened to have occured just in time for you to write your article about how your not racist. DO you feel better now??

His kool-aid comment was in reference to zealous Obama supporters. It was a reference to jonestown, not blacks

Really? Because they drank Flavor Aid at Jonestown, not Kool-Aid.

It's black people that drink Kool-Aid silly. McAfee is a racist pig like me.

I think its worth mentioning that the reference to Obama supporters as "Kool-Aid drinkers" was not a racial connotation. Rather it was a reference to the 1978 mass suicide of members of The People's Temple, a cult. Their leader Jim Jones convinced them all to drink grape flavored Kool-Aid that was laced with potassium cyanide. See the link below if you like:

I, for one, has had to endure the racist remarks while on campus. Its not just at football games. I've been hated on while practicing for Step Shows out in front of da 'Well, I've been hated on downtown by other students and even townies, and I've been hated on in the classroom by both fellow students and professors.
UGA is a racist place. And if I wasn't so far along in getting my degree I would transfer to a school that is more tolerant of peoples of all color.

How do you define "hated on". Could this be a perception on your part? Do people routinely make racist comments your direction? I don't often here people say things like that on or around campus unless it's a gameday when many people from outside UGA come to Athens for football. I have no doubt there are people with racist ideas at UGA but I doubt they proliferate the population of professors here or the great majority of students.

The fact that he was addressing these comments to a black student (to my understanding) seems to indicate this incident was racial in nature. Regardless, even if you really really hate someone, hoping they die is just plain stoopid and immoral.

And I applaud anyone who takes a stand against sentiment like that, regardless of the situation.

Sorry, took me while to realize I was being called out. I don't hate on people unless they are in shitty frats or judge me for living my pleasure filled, hedonistic, fratastic lifestyle. Racism typically has too much baggage as an issue to be any fun. I steer clear.

I see what you mean, Ben. It comes through ALMOST as clearly as the 'why can't somebody please pat ME on the back?' tone of your excessively angry post.

(assuming you meant to type "can't")

I'm fine with that as long as we both agree on the "daddy pat me on the back" and "douchebag" part of your article. I mean we all want a pat on the back from your dad.

I also find it interesting that you picked me of all commentators to reply to. You are so spoiled that its actually fun to watch you react.

Right on again there Ben, although its starting to sound like you're a bit too fixated on my dad- I don't really get it.
I suppose it's easy for me to get spoiled when I'm consuming the lives of people like you, who follow my writing so closely they call themselves "commentators."

Thanks for reading, take a break from wondering why your Dad left you as a child to come back by next week. I hope you can bring another whiny/bitchy comment, or digging really deep, call me a douchebag.

On second thought, if you really hate my "tone" that much Mr. Commentator, just use my column as a toilet seat cover and don't bother reading or angering yourself about it! It's that easy, Benny boy.

Yes, this article is the perfect place for you to air your barely-related, backwards politics.

But what's with all the antagonism in these comments? I'm not a consistent reader of McAfee's editorials, so I don't really know if he's as self-aggrandizing as the comments here would lead you to believe, but even if he is isn't the point he makes still valid?

I hope each of us will find the courage to standup to racism. For those of you who will require standing up to, shame on you. I am particularly sad to read that a student at UGA has to put up with racism. Ideally a unversity education should foster tolerance and a common decency. If you leave UGA with a degree, but you still harbor racism and you lack the good manners to keep it under wraps, you failed miserably.

STOP-RACISM-NOW

Marc,

I believe that your message should be spread to every college campus.

Princeton Seminary posted a statement condemning a newsletter created by anonymous seminary students and distributed all over campus in order to ridicule and humiliate a black scholar as "racist and malicious"!

LINK:
http://www.ptsem.edu/news/maliciousresponse.php

The seminarians were NOT EXPELLED however.
These are students who are in training to become ministers, priests and theologians! IMAGINE!

Did those students THINK THAT racial hatred would be accepted at Princeton Seminary? Did they THINK THAT others would look askance?

If they did think so, it seems that they were right.

It's really scary these days to be labeled as "politically correct". Frankly, taking an individual stand, even if that includes being an asshole, is the perfect approach. To laugh at a racist comment or let it go quietly by is to tacitly endorse it.

And I think this election cycle really let us see a lot of latent racism surface. Interesting, wasn't it? The comments you heard--the jokes--perhaps Fox News calling Michelle Obama "Barack's Baby-Mama" proved the best example of the fact that not only are established news organizations willing to use crude racial slurs, but the vast majority of their audience will excuse it.

It's gross.

Yay for Marc. He writes articles and acts like a douche to piss people off and get attention, then, when everyone is looking, he says, "racism is bad" and has the crowds supporting him.

Just because you act like a douche to another douche doesn't mean you aren't still a douche.

As a good friend of his, I know first hand that Marc is a super douche. He wouldn't argue against it either. Its pointless to argue that he is a douche, because there is no one out there to say otherwise, not even Marc. It would be like arguing with the air.

I would like to give Marc a congratulations though, for once again almost getting in a fight for making a smart ass comment. I hope it becomes a regular thing, especially when I am around to watch.

Who knew Marc had a sense of decency? Either that or he had nothing to write his column about this week and had to find something

Well, I guess some people just don't like to be friends with douches.

To me, douches and racists are on the same level. In fact, I'm sure there's been research to prove that most racists are in fact douches.

PS: Avoid the clap.
