SNOW! Athens covered, Monday classes canceled

Abstract:
As snowstorms pummeled much of the Southeast this weekend, many University students woke up today to discover the elusive precipitation had blanketed campus and the rest of town. "It's about time we got snow," said Ben Wineski, a sophomore from Decatur. "We haven't had snow like this in years....

Sorry to hear that.... Everyone should get to experience a snow day from time to time. :-)

If you can play in the snow, you can get to class.

This doesn't mean you can DRIVE. Of course you can walk around, but many people's cars are snowed in their driveways. Also it would be very dangerous to have buses running on these roads.

The snow was drivable yesterday - I have a little, light baby 2 door coupe and it didn't slide... and it has older tires on it. If people used their lower gears (yes, even automatics have gears that you can use in instances of snow!) even the most inexperienced snow drivers would get around just fine. As of this morning the roads were really clear and melting off. I'm actually pretty mad that the library and SLC are closed when this is a week full of finals and papers being due! (yes, resources for students are handy.)

Are you kidding me? Did you consider the people that commute to campus dispshit? Unless you had 4wd, you weren't going anywhere this morning.

James - classes aren't cancelled to accommodate the students who live on campus. They're cancelled for the other students, faculty, and staff who have to drive on the dangerous roads to get to campus.

I attended UGA from 1999 - 2004, and I saw UGA closed three times for weather. Let's not forget the time that they waited until after classes had started to cancel class - many students and faculty/staff were already on campus and had to drive again on the terrible roads to get home.

Better safe than sorry with this kind of snow and ice on the ground.

What about the students who live off campus and cannot drive because of the icy road conditions. Most of us students have been raised in the south where we were not taught how to deal with icy roads. I would much rather them cancel classes and maybe save a few lives than to not....

The great majority of students live on campus. Life goes on. If the professor can't make it, the graduate assistant can take over.

Just pretend you have graduated, you have a critical job (i.e., emergency room nurse, fireman) and you have to get to work. Good life experience !!

Adapt, be flexible and overcome !!

Again, no, James

No they don't. Only freshman, athletes, and some upperclassmen choose to live on campus. Enjoy your day off instead of complaining...

the great majority of students DO NOT live on campus. Furthermore, most people will not have critical jobs there they must get to come hell or high water. Why risk harm to a great number of people who won't have such jobs simply to give some fictitious training to the select few who will. you really will find something to complain about in everything

Ignorance is no excuse James

Okay, James. Most classes don't have graduate assistants and they don't all live on campus. As a reference to a previous comment you made about being able to play in it equates being able to go to class- I would go out and play in the snow if it were three feet deep, but wouldn't dare drive in it to go to class. You seem incredibly disconnected from how things work.

What is your anal obsession with being in class?

Several years ago the administration chose not to close campus after a snow storm. We all dutifully came to work that day. Within 2 hours, they changed the administration their minds. While one of my best friends - and also a staff member- walked to her car, she slipped on ice and broke her ankle. Had they just shut the campus down initially, she would have never had the broken ankle, weeks of recovery, and missed time at work.

UGA and the South- in general- are not accustomed to or prepared to quickly recover from 6 inches of snow and potential ice. Even before the real snow fell yesterday, there were cars in ditches, trees, and guard rails on the bypass. People were driving way too fast and close together. I thought for sure someone was going to hit my car. They had no clue how to handle these conditions.

I am total agreement that the campus should close when we're facing this kind of weather.

And how many people get hurt playing at home clowning around instead of being in class?

Oh, the horror of it all !!!!!!!!!11

James: If they get hurt messing around outside it's their own fault. However if UGA is mandating people report to work/school, then they are responsible if someone gets hurt on their way to, or on campus.

We're all smarter than James

hospitals, firehouses, etc make arrangements for their employees to stay on site PRIOR to the start of the storm. should UGA just have all of the students and staff go camp out in their classrooms and offices? where there may or may not be power?
you have a free day off to play in the snow, quit bitching and enjoy it!

Anyone who is upset about classes being canceled should GET A LIFE ! Anyone happy about classes being canceled should GET A LIFE ! Students are the only citizens on earth who have so little responsibility that they have the luxury of "being offended". How many of you dorks had a thought about those in the projects who didn't have heat? How many of you actually did anything to help someone in need today.
Think about it future leaders of the world. Did anyone enter your thoughts today besides your main squeeze or a drinking buddy? Give us all a break and go away until you grow up!

I didn't have heat. I made it through the one night without power. I towed four people out of ditches today. I also helped kids "in the projects" build a snowman. Maybe you should vent your pent up aggesssion somewhere else.

Up north, the school system sets aside up to a week for snow related incidents. They are also better equipped to recover. The University will survive ONE day off. Also, don't you find your post a little hypocritical?

To James:

Even if I wanted to come to class, I couldn't. Too many people driving front wheel drive Civics and Camry's lost control of their cars and blocked the roads. I had to turn around three times just to get out of my neighborhood. Once I got out, there were fallen trees, and downed power lines; I had no power until noon today. You are making yourself look like a fool. Closing the University was a good idea; everybody can miss ONE day.

seriously, james?

posted 3/02/09 @ 4:21 PM EST

James,
Just enjoy the snow day. This argument is ridiculous. I literally COULD NOT get out of my driveway this morning- a tree fell across it, and any attempted "escape" would have led to disastrous things for my car. Even if I could have, I would have been hard pressed to leave the driveway. Southerners don't know snow. It scares us. we can't drive in, we freak out and go to the store for milk, bread, and eggs (and beer, when it's not Sunday). It's a better place--with far fewer accidents--when everyone just stays put.
Good job, UGA, for announcing the closing so early. You saved a lot of people a lot of grief.
Thank you!

Apparently, UGA is not going to be as smart tomorrow. The Eastside of Athens is still rediculous and many of us still do not have power (yea blackberries!) and have been without power now for over TWENTY EIGHT HOURS! The low tonight will be 17 (if not lower) and I just came back in from walking my dog and there is already BLACK ICE all over our parking lot and covering the roads (be careful driving tonight guys!!)

How are they expecting those buses to run on campus? I'd have to leave around 3AM to get to East Deck and walk ... (and yes I know if the buses don't run, classes get cancelled...). But here's the deal ... if UGA does not wisen up, we're going to see way more Honda's, Civics, and Rangers (and their drivers) crying (and possibly injured) on the side of the road in the morning!
Come on UGA --- GET SMART!

I COMPLETELY agree with you (above me). I was SHOCKED to find UGA did not cancel for Tuesday. I drove from South Carolina to get back in Athens today and even at 5pm, found parts of the road quite hazardous. Just wait until 8am Tuesday when it's only 20-something degrees and the snow and melting snow has had all night to re-freeze. It won't be above freezing until about 11am or noon. Come'on UGA...don't be dumb and naive...just cancel class tomorrow.

James, we just had 6.5inches of snow. Why don't you get a life? What a miserable outlook on life you have. It takes a long time for the roads to recover and for power to be restored. Athens and the south in general are not equipped to deal with this much snow. I have friends that still do not have power. What is Dr. Adams thinking? School should at least be delayed tomorrow.

I am shocked that UGA is going to risk a lawsuit by staying open tomorrow. They are asking for it if they continue with their decision to operate normally on Tuesday. There is ice on the roads now, and it's only going to get colder. There are tree limbs down and TONS of black ice. Someone is BOUND to slip and fall or crash a car on the way to campus, and UGA will be stuck with the blame. I am in shock that they are willing to take such a big risk...not too smart. But they probably WON'T change anything now because they've already released a statement and they're all too hardheaded to admit they might've been wrong. Stupid, stupid, stupid.

Are you serious UGA? A lot of my friends are still without power. Without power, you can't charge your phone, can't check your email, can't set your alarm, can't study (ok maybe by candlelight) I live off campus, up a hill that is already iced over...and it's not even midnight yet. Perhaps the ice would melt when it's in the 40s, but until then, get smart UGA. And what about those that are disabled? In wheelchairs, crutches? They cannot walk to class, which is what I will be doing tomorrow (uphill, 3 miles) since I don't have fourwheel drive. SERIOUSLY UGA?

Are you serious UGA!!!???

posted 3/02/09 @ 11:26 PM EST

I had a friend that lives OFF CAMPUS that nearly wrecked earlier because her car slid on ice. How can you still be considering class tomorrow with temperatures dropping to 20 degrees tonight? Clarke and Oconee County schools have canceled classes because they believe the roads are too hazardous. What is YOUR excuse? Many students are still with out power! lawsuits...???

apparently our budget crisis can handle a multimillion dollar lawsuit by some kid or faculty member who was injured on campus or on the way to campus.

I think everyone that gets in a wreck today, Tuesday, due to ice on the road should file a lawsuit against President Adams. He has absolutely no concern for his student's safety. This is Georgia, most people don't know how to drive in these conditions, and some people can not miss class.
