Injuries, damage galore as weather wreaks havoc

Abstract:
Though the University was scheduled to run under normal operating hours Tuesday, for some it was hardly business as usual as many braved icy conditions and downed trees to get to campus.

Injuries, delayed buses and canceled classes persisted as some road conditions around town and spots around campus remained icy....

I grew up in Chicago. It still amazes me that Georgia cancels school over snow. It's not a big deal walking in snow and ice. If you watch and be careful of what you're walking on, it is not that difficult. Hearing people complain about walking in snow to class makes me laugh. Go to school up north and you will have to walk through a foot of snow to class.

Katie,

Having to walk through the snow is the reason why we don't go to school up north and your comments are the reason why we get annoyed with people from the north.

Agreed, The Silent Majority. And to Katie, snow is a BIG deal in the south. We are not accustomed to dealing with that much snow. We hardly ever get accumulation and certainly not 6.5 inches! I get so annoyed with people from the north talking about how bad the weather is bad year round. Who cares?

Katie:
Having grown up in Chicago, you should know the difference in snow and ice. What we had here was snow that turned to ice, which is dangerous anywhere, Chicago, Athens, Miami...where ever.

Having lived in Chicago and New York myself, I can tell you that the roads and landscape there are BUILT for snow and ice. The roads and landscape here are not. We have centuries-old oak trees and a road system that is built for the hot summers, not a layer of ice and snow.

The transportation system that gets people to school is different, the way the roads are cared for is different (why invest in snow machinery and salt trucks when it's needed once every three or four years).

I could go on and correct you about how many times class was cancelled in undergrad (at UIC)--twice for blizzard, 3 times for "DANGEROUS HEAT" but I guess you wouldn't believe me.

By the way, the only people that I know who had to be treated for injuries the past two days were friends from Michigan who "knew how to drive on ice."

So continue to be ignorant to this and be one of those annoying people who lambast and say "oh this would never happen up north" and we'll continue to laugh every time you people can't handle 80-degree "heat waves" every summer--it's the way life goes.

Put your cleats on and get to class. Nancy Kerrigan had no problems dancing on the ice.
