Abstract:
Athens offers students too much alcoholAs a college town, I believe there should be more opportunities for fun without the use of substances such as alcohol. Athens is a town completely centered on the bar scene, and I feel it leads to and increases the likelihood of students developing substance abuse disorders....

Rachel,

You are right about how college is a time to expand your mind. That is why I drink until I blackout and snort magic powder so I stay up all night to learn about new experiences.

How bout you go back to your little grad school and I'll continue to experiment in my own way.

Michael,

While I agree with you that Athens is heavily focused upon alcohol consumption, the problem lies no with the bars or the students, but with the way that Athens and the Univesity interact. Because the University pays no property taxes, the city misses out on a lot of revenue from land that lies right in the heart of the town. Combine this with the fact that Athens has large swaths of government housing off of Baxter Street on both sides of Milledge Avenue, the city makes almost no money and must find its funds elsewhere.

Where do they find this money, you ask? Simple. Liquor licenses and MIP charges. Most of the time, when a student is arrested for underage consumption, they show up at their court date and the Assistant DA tells them that they are eligible for "Pre-Trial Intervention", which basically means they get to pay a $300-$700 fine, must perform 20 hours or so of community service, and are on probation for 1 year.

Athens-Clarke County, I call shenanigans on you.

And by "Michael", I of course meant Rachel. Sorry, that is what I get for being on the internet before I'm well and truly awake.

I don't know about you, Rachel, but I've learn tons of useful tidbits from my many "mind expanding" experiences downtown. For example:
1. Where can I learn how to properly urinate while holding 2 drinks at the same time?
2. The words "Happy Hour" do not necessarily mean your night will always end that way.
3. While places such as The Chapel and Buddha Bar may not be intended for spiritual guidance, I do usually end up on my knees there.
4. Underwear should be worn at all times; especially if you're that chick that was sprawled out in front of Firehouse in a skirt for all the world to see your "hoo-ha".
5. And lastly, you can be tested for any STD at the health center and Plan B can be bought for only $15.

Who needs the "Miller" Learning Center anymore when you have Broad, Clayton, and Washington Streets?
