IN REMEMBRANCE

Abstract:
Lauren Wade, a sophomore anthropology major from Athens, looks to Connor Gillis, a senior anthropology major, as they lie inside sketches of bodies Thursday at Tate Plaza.

The drawings represent two of the 23 outlines which represent a person killed this year as a result of a hate crime. The event was for the Transgender Day of Remembrance, which honors transgender people who died because of their lifestyle....

They "lay" inside the drawings? What are they, chickens?

1) You mean there were 23 murders last Thursday on Tate Plaza?

I must have missed that.

2) If Lauren is supposed to be dead, why is she looking at Connor ?

3) Did whoever wrote this article pass English 101 ?

4) LGBT needs to find something to do.

What the hell is a hate crime? Why is 1 murder more hateful than another murder?
If 1 transgendered person murders another transgendered person, Is that a hate crime?
If a transgendered person murders a white straight male why is this any less hateful than the other way around?
Why the hell should "hate" itself be a crime. Aren't all murders equally hateful?

I don't mean to draw attention from any poor soul who was murdered in cold blood. Rest in peace

A hate crime is an act of terrorism against a group of people. If a tranny is killed solely for being a tranny, the victims of the crime are all trannies, not just that specific one that was killed.

If someone killed you just because you're white, or redneck, or too unintelligent to grasp the fairly simple concept of what a hate crime is, it would be an act of terrorism against all stupid or bigoted people.

Now you know.

Anon:

If a tranny is killed solely for being a tranny, and the murderer is punished to a greater degree because of this, then you are punishing thought. It is silly to punish someone differently for a crime based on what emotion or feeling was going on in their head at the time the crime occurred.

Now is killing a white or redneck or unintelligent person less of a crime? and does it deserve less of a punishment? No one can argue that. that in itself if bigoted. Why is one life more valuable?

by your logic, killing a white person just because he is white would be a greater hate crime because there are more victims (all white people). Killing a tranny in a fit of rage has fewer victims (all trannies).

All murderers should get the worst punishment possible, regardless of what they were thinking at the time of the crime. How could you possibly punish me any more for killing you than you would be punished for killing me.

Thought should not be a crime.

You would be WRONG. The only groups protected by the hate crime statute are recognized social minorities. If I commit crimes against dumbasses solely for the fact that they are dumbasses and I target that subset of the population, it is not a hate crime. Now, if I commit a crime against a social minority (based on sexual orientation, ethnicity, etc.) and I target that subset of the population, then I will be tried for a hate crime.

As previously stated, a problem with hate crimes that it is a form of thought-policing. Furthermore, minorities are afforded more protection under the law than someone like me who is not a social minority because of the hate crime statute. That, my friends, is a violation of equal protection clause guaranteed by the 14th Amendment.

We already prosecute "thought" crimes. For example, downloading child pornography off the internet. There is no victim in that simple act, as the photo has been taken by someone else (who committed an "act" crime), but the act of downloading the image harms no one per se.

Surely you don't want to rid the books of laws pertaining to downloading child porn, right?

As for the killing-dumbasses-because-they're-dumbasses; clearly I was joking. If you didn't get that, well, I wonder how you got into this school.

The reason possessing child pornography is illegal is because a child has to be involved in the process. (As cited by the US Supreme Court in their ruling against child porn possession.)

So possession of child porn is not a thought crime because having the material perpetuates the abuse of children in the industry. Duh

Duh[/QUOTE]No, the only person who actually harmed the child is the person who staged and took the photograph. If one or 100 people download the image, there's no actual damage inflicted upon the child that hasn't already been done. It's not 100 times worse if 100 people download the image. If you continue to fail to grasp this simple concept, perhaps a logic course is in order for you?

You are so correct. All of this is nothing more than an attempt by liberals to control "thought". It's just the first step.

In Canada, right now, a minister cannot preach on the radio that homosexuality is a sin (as the Bible clearly states). Now, you may not believe the Bible, or that it's a sin but the issue is one of "free speech". If he does, he is fined heavily.

Greg Wilson you are a fatass douche bag who does what Mommy and Daddy tell you to.

You might want to try homosexuality - it'll be the only way that you'll lose your virginity.

I don't know how you got into UGA if you seriously believe the first amendment is going away any time soon. That's outlandishly ridiculous.

I think you're citing Leviticus 18:22 when you say what "the Bible clearly states", and if you read the passage, I think you might find it not all that clear. If you continue on to Leviticus 19:19, another law laid down says not to wear a shirt woven from two different materials... I think we're all guilty of an occasional poly/cotton blend, aren't we? And since these two laws are from the same book, shouldn't they be equal in effect? Yet you don't see poly/cotton bashers around...

Also, who said that transgender had anything to do with homosexuality?

One argument for tg people is that at birth, a child may have secondary sex characteristics for both male and female. The gender assignment is then left up to the doctor. Who's to say he makes the right call?

Okay, I like the red and black and still read it from Atlanta to catch up on things going on around Athens, but is it really that much to ask for captions that make any sort of sense? The first sentence, "Lauren Wade, a sophomore anthropology major from Athens, looks to Connor Gillis, a senior anthropology major, lay inside sketches of bodies", is completely unclear. Take out the descriptions and the sentence reads "Lauren wade looks to Connor Gillis lay inside sketches of bodies." What? On top of not making any sense semantically, the verb tense doesn't agree. Either she looks to Connor Gillis and they lie inside sketches or she looked to Connor Gillis and they lay inside sketches. Also, the drawings represent two of the 23 murders based on hate crimes within the last year on Thursday at Tate Plaza. What? Were they only representing two of the 23 murders that have occured on thursdays at Tate Plaza within the last year? Come on, R&B! Is there no one that knows how to proofread?

Red and Black you never cease to amaze me. Your feature article supposedly about raising awareness for transgender violence features a very solemn student within the chalk out line smiling ear to ear.

You stay classy, UGA.

I am NOT an anthropology major! I'm in sociology. And also, that was a poor picture choice. I laid there for SOOO long trying to get people's attention and you publish the picture where I'm talking to connor. Ahhh.

It's an AMENDMENT to the CONSTITUTION. That cannot go away without another amendment. Do you have any idea how hard it is to pass an amendment? Seriously. If you don't, look it up. It's almost impossible. It would take something WILDLY popular, and restricting free speech will never get 75%+ support in the USA in our lifetime. EVER.

If you're seriously that concerned, perhaps we can fashion some tin foil hats for you. Don't forget to remove any silver fillings - that's how the big bad brother tracks your every move!
