Abstract:
"Cash, check or credit accepted here" is a statement heard at the restaurants on Fridays, the movies on Saturdays and now some churches on Sundays.

While the phenomenon of tithing with a credit card may produce mixed emotions in congregations, some don't see it going away....

If my church starts taking credit cards, I'll be finding a new church.

That is crazy! Why? It is just a more convenient way to tithe. I use online Billpay for mine...

I don't really understand why your are say "Credit Card" There is a big difference between credit and debit cards. Although I do not use the giving kiosk at my church, I would never dare say I would change churches over how someone tithes. Besides, once you have found a true church home,it's not that easy to just walk away.

I saw electronic-funds-tranfer forms being given out in churches in Germany 20 years ago.

Borrowing money to donate it is silly and irresponsible. But debit cards (and credit cards that you pay off monthly) are the modern substitute for checks or cash. Why shouldn't churches take them?

At first I can see how some people would be skeptical about a giving kiosk at church, but then, think about it. I use my debit card for gasoline, Guthries, and game days. why not at God's house? It only makes sense. Putting tithes on a credit card .... that's a red flag. Using my debit card for giving ... a novel idea. Good luck to the folks at SecureGive.com!

Very informative article by Miss Dillard. I was not aware that these payment options were available. She really opened my eyes.

Robyn,

I know there's a difference between credit cards and debit cards. Once again, if my church starts taking CREDIT cards for tithes, I'll be finding a new church.

Encouraging (making available... whatever) the option of paying tithes by credit is not good leadership in a church. And, I do love my church, it is a "home", as you mention. As such, I shouldn't sanction the invitation into my home the temptation to spend money that I might not have. That's why I would vigorously oppose any attempt to solicit tithes on credit.
