DON'T FEAR THE REEFER

Abstract:
John Hill of the University chapter of Georgia's National Organization for the Reform of Marijuana Laws (NORML) proposed new legislation to decriminalize marijuana at the Athens City Council meeting Tuesday night. The group collected more than 2,000 signatures in favor of the proposed legislation, which the University chapter presented at the meeting....

Haha. The proof is all there. Here's a photo of Mr. Lead Pothead right here, with ragged face, an ass ugly haircut, a crappy outfit, terrible posture, and a mouth hanging open like a fly hotel.

Moreover, in a town with some 100,000 potheads, the best he and his buddies could do was get 2000 signatures for a cause they so strongly believe in? Want to know why? Laziness and lack of real ambition.

Gold, really.

He's out doing a hell of a lot more in what he believes in than you appear to be so... respect to him, not so much to joe.

LOL! Damn...now that is funny...and right on target. Dude thinks he's promoting weed, but he's really a walking demo of how smoking TOO MUCH weed makes you look and act like a dumb, duh, dumpy, dipsh!t. You're right, the mouth hanging open really complete's the picture. "Fly Hotel"...I'm LMFAO...I think I see a fly buzzing into his mouth in that photo...and another one buzzing out. Guess he's pretty "buzzed."

. . . the potheads have organized? Heavens. We'll have to station guards at the Taco Bell to fend them off.

Couldn't they have found something more--whoa. I mean, like, whoa. Dude, like, look at your fingers. I mean, look at your hands. Have you ever, like, REALLY looked at your hands before?

Thank you, you made my day with this post...

Shouldn't people be raising awareness for issues that actually HELP humanity?

I don't trust NORML any more than I trust the tobacco industry. Brain researchers keep finding marijuana to be more harmful than anyone thought. See for example:

http://www.bmj.com/cgi/content/full/330/7481/11

This is not a politically motivated study -- it is part of a series of studies done in the Netherlands, where marijuana is tolerated, and the researchers were not expecting this result.

And here is the result:
Conclusion Cannabis use moderately increases the risk of psychotic symptoms in young people but has a much stronger effect in those with evidence of predisposition for psychosis.

Is that really the best defense you can find against smoking pot???? "Hey don't smoke that theres a slight chance if you do....and are predisposed to phychosis... it might make it a little worse."
You should be taken out back and beaten with a hose

"Is that really the best defense you can find against smoking pot?"

Well, remember that psychosis isn't the flu. It's a lifelong disability, and to me, a 1% or even 0.3% chance of getting it, if avoidable, is worth avoiding. Also, don't just read one study -- read the others, such as studies of cannabis addiction (which is real and common, despite the 1970s dogma that there was no such thing).

"You should be taken out back and beaten with a hose"

For pointing out scientific papers, or for having an opinion different from yours?

Note that I'm not pushing alcohol or tobacco either.

Joe, his mouth is open because he is actually speaking and standing up for something he believes in. You're just like everybody else who throws marijuana activists into the "lazy pothead" category - that's just ignorant. Sure there are a lot of lazy potheads out there, nobody will deny that. But there are also plenty of intelligent, motivated, law-abiding citizens who choose to consume marijuana over alcohol or other drugs because they feel it is a safer alternative. They would rather smoke a joint and relax than get drunk and make a fool of themselves. They feel like they shouldn't be treated as criminals for doing something in the privacy of their own home that harms nobody.

Alcohol and tobacco account for more deaths than marijuana ever will. Joe, I'm not going to assume anything about you (like you did about John), but there's a good statistical chance that you've had a drink or two in your life. And if that is the case, stop being a hypocrite, because alcohol is way more harmful of a drug than marijuana.

I'll leave you with a little quote from DEA Administrative Law Judge Francis L. Young - "A smoker would theoretically have to consume nearly fifteen hundred pounds of marijuana within about 15 minutes to induce a lethal response... In strict medical terms, marijuana is far safer than many of the foods we commonly consume. For example, eating ten raw potatoes can result in a toxic response. By comparison, it is physically impossible to eat enough marijuana to induce death."

It's misleading to classify marijuana as safe just because of the difficulty of consuming a lethal dose. There are kinds of potential harm other than immediate death by overdose. Again, please pay attention to recent brain research, not just 1970s dogma.

If they are smoking pot then how exactly are they law abiding citizens?? Maybe next time your argument will make sense. Best wishes for a bright future.

people just simply have a right to get high if they choose. want to get drunk? go ahead, suffer the consequences. want to smoke pot? go ahead, suffer the consequences. pretty damn simple

Using marijuana is a victimless crime. Governments are not created to be babysitters or moral police. People should be allowed to do whatever they want to do as long as it does not infringe on other people's rights and their pursuit of happiness. Smoking pot makes some people happy. So what? People neeed to get off their high horse and realize that there are many more serious problems (i.e. violent crimes, poor economy, poverty)that should be addressed before personal choices are legislated. It's just a plant.

I love it when people say "down with marijuana" because "it's bad for you and makes you lethargic and do stupid things." Last time I checked, alcohol doesn't deviate from those results. I say legalize all drugs. People chose to do them for the hell of it; it's their life. It's called Natural Selection baby. Let the stupid die and the not as stupid survive.

Technically, it wouldn't be natural selection. People almost always die from lung and liver cancer after they reproduce.

I applaud John Hill for his efforts. The issue with NORML is the reformation of laws regarding marijuana use, not whether or not it is harmful. Yes, of course inhaling raw plant smoke is harmful but less so than many other perfectly legal activities you can pursue.

To "what a dumb cause" @ 10:44: The imprisonment of nonviolent marijuana offenders at TAXPAYERS EXPENSE is a very serious issue that affects all of us. It is not "a dumb cause" considering the costs of incarceration and the overcrowding of jails. Go to a prison like the Phinizy Swamp facility in Augusta, GA and look at 400 nonviolent inmates sleeping on cots on the floor. I believe that NORML can help humanity.

To Michael Covington @ 11:46: What is truly misleading is to staunchly defend one study while laughing in the face of another. I don't trust the tobacco industry either but their lobbyists exist and are VERY powerful in Washington. Tobacco's legality ought to anger you much more than marijuana's illegality. If I'm not posting this too late, I would like to hear some sort of definition of "1970's Dogma" please.

These people are not "dumb potheads" and they are confronting a social issue that is obviously worthy of our lawmakers' time. I think the issue should at least be open to debate that doesn't resort to name calling.

ok,

Alcohol is proven to be more and more lethal then marijuana, yet i don't see anyone complaining about the use of alcohol. marijuana has been proven to help, do some research. Marijuana is used medically today for many people suffering from cancer. I was prescribed marijuana to help increase my appetite during chemotherapy and granted some people abuse it but there are people out there who use it for a completely different reason. So before you quickly dismiss this guy for trying to legalize something that used today, why don't you research and see just how many people are benefitting from it. marijuana has been around longer than alcohol. the main reason it has not been legalize, is not because its a "dangerous" drug, its that it cannot be taxed because anyone can grow. tobacco is proven to kill, alcohol is proven to kill and people are addicted to them and paying a lot for them. yet they arent illegal.

think about it first before you push your stupid comments on someone who's trying to make a difference. or you can just drink a six pack with your buddies and bitch about "potheads" and do nothing with your life.

At least when people sit around doing nothing and drinking they don't smell up the whole house.

And since when are potheads fighting against drunks? Don't they tend to intermix?
