I am very disturbed by the emails of Mark Jensen and disappointed that they were downplayed by Mr. Shewmaker in the lecture that he gave to my Psychology of Women class, who called them silly and insignificant. I believe the definition of sexual harassment must be changed on campus to a broader definition in order to curb cases such as this. Women obviously have a different experience on campus than their male colleagues and it is unfair for the university to overlook and excuse professors such as Jensen and Doyle simply because they don't find them in violation of the code. Comments that these professors make affect female students and make for an uncomfortable learning environment. If Shewmaker is the feminist that he claims to be, he will be more proactive in preventing harassment and get rid of these professors instead of protecting them or making excuses.

Are you proposing that the University define Sexual Harassment that is not in accord with the legal definition? How would the University defend itself against people they find in violation of a policy that fits no case law on the matter?

Further: to make all behavior that you find boorish, reprehensible or in distasteful fit the definition of Sexual Harassment would lead to never ending litigation. Boorishness may be unseemly, but do you really think we should have laws against it?

There is not a legal remedy for every human behavior. Of course, perhaps you would be comfortable in theocratic society. Then, we could punish all malefactors that violate a very tightly worded code of conduct.

boorish is just an old fashioned "boys will be boys" term for inappropriate. it is the Laws that need to be changed.

More laws and more accountability for the perpetrators - people wouldn't do this if there was more legislation in place to punish them and have them imprisoned for more than a couple of years like we have now.
