Wait...so this means we all have to pay $100 extra next semester...and it's only for one semester...wow, wish I had tried to graduate early instead of getting stuck paying $100 for something that I won't be using after May. Great.

At least it's only a temporary fee. Because of the BOR's changes to the insurance plans, my insurance is increasing $22 a month and my coworker's is increasing $60 a month.

I seriously doubt that most of the students give a shit about employees here.

WORD. Not to mention that all of our retirement plans have taken a hit, and the University isn't contributing the same amount of money to them. If you do the math, it is the employees who are getting screwed, not the students. You're is temporary. Do you think that the University will ever go back to the previous retirement and insurance contributions? NO.

so, we are having to pay for the University's reduced budget? i thought we were pushing for a reduction in power for the upper classes, but it seems like we lower income people are just continuing to pay them so they can maintain their salary while we are forced to take out loans which we will never be able to pay back and live off ramen. well even ramen has gotten expensive... it's just not right. i can't imagine why they need $100 from every one of the thousands of students who go here. that's over $1 million! is this really necessary? and the bigger question I am curious to know is: is this really going towards what we think it is?

I'm not a math person, but with more than 30,000 students at UGA, doesn't that come to more than $3,000,000 (plus any other research universities in the system).

Your implication that anyone who is against the extra fee is spoiled, lazy or a bum is ignorant and shows how uninformed you are.

No, I am going there with you. You made a sweeping generalization about students. It's a completely a completely unfair statement that appears to be based on your resentement of those who have financial priviledge and don't need to work. I also work with students on a very regular basis- by no means are all students who complain about tuition increases (particularly this one) part of the group that you seem to resent.

Well little miss priss, while many UGA students do rely on "mommy and daddy" for everything the rest of us do not. Furthermore, those students whom "mommy and daddy" pay everything for would not be writing in complaining about this extra $100.00 now would they?

Notice in the email UGA sent students, they said we are in a substantial economic crisis and we basically are charging you $100 extra because we can..i guess they didn't care that most of us are also struggling in this economic crisis

Why don't you shut the hell up and realize not everyone relies on "Mommy and Daddy" (oh and great job for using the popular term "relying on mommy and daddy")

Some of us, and many of us do have jobs, but still have to buy books, which is not covered, as well as rent, food, gas-- all of these during the struggling economy.

Get off your high horse jack ass, and realize some of us do work, but have hard majors that require HOURS on end each day of studying, all while trying to fit in a job.

Get the broom stick out of your ass.

i'm a full-time student and work 20 hours each week and i still struggle to pay for groceries and utilities (split between 3 ppl with no cable or internet). i don't know how students who really, truely pay their own way do it. because a minimum wage(or close to minimum wage) job pays enough for you to afford rent, utilities, groceries, tuition, books, fees, school supplies, insurance, gas, coffee for all those all-nighters (which you'd have to pull often because during waking hours, you'd be working)..... i have way too many friends who barely survive paying their own way. dare i say it, i'm sure it didn't help them retain the hope scholarship, further tightening their financial constraints.

What about this: I do have a job, but since I AM A STUDENT AND GO TO SCHOOL and actually want to maintain my A average, I don't have as much time to devote to that job as someone not in school. Oh yeah, and I have an UNPAID internship that I also go to because I actually want experience in my field so I can get start a career when I graduate. Oh..and one more thing, I have a student loan to pay for my housing, food, gas, etc. And when I took that out I did not expect to be paying an extra $100 in the spring semester. So yeah, saying all us "lazy college students" should get a job is good in theory, but what about us who essentially have 3 jobs (school, work, internship) and still don't have the money to pay for that? Guess I'll have to ask daddy...oh wait he's been trying to sell a house for a year and since the housing market sucks he's struggling too. Hello $100 fee as part of my Christmas.

There's an old song which says that "the rich get rich and the poor get poorer". Welcome to Obama-economics, keeping those in the upper levels of the economic stratus while keeping the burden on the backs of the every day common man. "Temporary fee" - does anyone ever recall in reality a fee that said to be temporary that went away? Remember the first years of SPLOST taxes that were designed to improve roads? Where has that led us? It's time to cut off the TOP levels and not keep on expecting those on the lower rungs of the totem pole to continue to be beaten down at every turn. Just today the price of a college education in EVERY state except California got an "F", for failure to make college affordable to residents. AS long as the working force keep on having to make sacrifices so that those higher on the ladder can maintain their life styles, there will continually be "temporary" fees upon "temporary fees". The athletic program @ UGA, in particular football, brings in a tremendous amount of money - divert some of that to other programs by taking away scholarships of athletes who continually get into trouble and show a disdain for discipline off the field - in the spring semester exactly how much could THAT add to UGA's funds if all those football players, including some recently, had their scholarships revoked and the funds returned to the operating funds of UGA? It's time to reward those who make the wheels turn and by not allowing those who don't or who throw cogs into the wheels to keep on doing what they've been doing. I'm a great fan of UGA athletics, in particular football, but some of the continuing actions of players this season off the field have sickened and angered me.

posted 12/03/08 @ 3:13 PM EST

We should have free education like other countries. Better yet, there should be no money at all! I think everything should be. After all, we have enought stuff for everyone, people are just too greedy.

Laura

posted 12/04/08 @ 5:27 AM EST

We very well could have that, but that would be socialist, and as far as I could tell from my summer in the south - socialist is synonymous with the failed USSR, dictators, and terrorists (and that is seriously from my talks with a number of Georgians after they'd cite Obama's 'socialism' as a reason he is un-American). Personally, I have been to Canada and Europe and have a somewhat realistic perspective on that whole thing, and I think they really do have an overall higher standard of living than we do, including less poverty and a much more educated population.

Thinking back on all those conversations of politics in GA makes me want to pray with everything that I have that the people in Athens exercise their brainpower by forming their own opinions and not just connecting everything bad and using it in arguments against things that aren't strictly Republican.

The most irritating thing about this situation is that most of us did not find out this information until today (Dec 3). Well, yesterday was the deadline to pay tuition without a penalty charge. How can Regents expect us to "understand" when we were given no knowledge of this prior to paying tuition? This behavior of notifying us after the fact makes it all the more suspicious.

I imagine that by cutting pay among the tops execs/administrators of the system we could easily cut out enough to not have to charge the students and tax-payers who are already paying them to begin with.

Every UGA student has to pay it even if you are on some scholarship. I guess UGA felt left out with all these companies getting bailouts lately. I guess they wanted to jump in on it too. How about that POS Adams take a pay cut and then maybe he will make some better decisions when it hits him in his own pocket.

It seems like most of the student body and even faculty/staff are not happy about this budget cut. Which is saying something.

First of all the urgent need for an extra 3.6 million out of the student body by next Friday is very fishy. It's either they are in over their heads in debt from all the renovations and new buildings (ie Tate2, Llamar Dodd, EVC/ECV, possibly GA Museum of Art) that most students find unnecessary anyways, OR they're storing it up to prepare for the continuing economic depression. IF they're using this to make ANY MORE unnecessary additions to campus, that would be really stupid of them.

I think we're in general agreement that we don't want our money to be in unsafe hands: to pay for debt resulted from shortsighted budgeting a few years back, or to pay for another unnecessary addition.

If we can get enough of the students and faculty to write a petition, AND media coverage from R&B , I'm up for it.
