On tap for Soulja Boy - hot wings, Gatorade and $28,000 (w/contract)

Abstract:
A $28,000 check isn't the only perk Soulja Boy will receive for his performance at Legion field this evening.

He'll also get Hi-C Fruit Punch, a fruit tray and a platter of hot and mild wings - which must be served hot - according to his contract.

"I'm a little surprised by the list," said freshman Laura Claire Whatley of Decatur, who said she thought the list would have included "girls, liquor, weed and some honey buns....

Wow...couldn't agree more. Thank you, Laura, for being such an outstanding ambassador of our University. I'm proud that that was the first thing that came to your mind.

I would agree that this isn't wise spending from the $100 increase, but the money that pays for Union Entertainment comes from a completely different student fund. Each student pays X amount of dollars in their student fees that goes to pay for all the entertainment acts that year. Still, I wonder where the $100 went...

Please, the guy fits his own stereotype by asking for:

Hot wings, fruit punch, gatorade, and sprite...

Who the hell cares about stereotypes?

Why is everybody mad that Soulja Boy is coming? The last time i checked the event was being sponsered by the Black Student Union so they can pick who they want to perform. Shannon Otto said something that kinda made since but was kinda stupid. She said let the students vote on who should perform. In theory thats a good idea but when you look closly at it its not. UGA is 6% black, which is roughly 1800 black students, compare to the over 20,000 white students. If there was a vote, we would be having country artist perfrom until the day that I graduate.
Stop complaining so much, if you dont wanna go to the concert dont go.

Sweet Jesus, would someone like to talk about stereotypes? Last time I checked, not all white people like country music, just as all black people don't like ignorant, meaningless music written by "artists" like Soulja boy.

not sponsored by Black Student Union

The concert is NOT being sponsored by the Black Student Union. It is being sponsored by CBCP, The Committee for Black Cultural Programming. The BSU is a completely different organization.

soulja boy stereotypes himself --- his songs about hos and and his report card with all F's on it do all the damage he needs to do to the African American male.

I'm sure the real black leaders of today like Obama and Michael Jordan are going to rush to his defense soon...right, they won't. Because he is a disgrace to them - represents everything they are trying to put to rest in young black men

"Girls Liquor Weed and Honey Buns." ??? Laura Whatley may be the most ignorant person i've ever quoted.

Bottom line. The fees we pay for activities are not just for this soulja boy concert. UGA has events going on throughout the whole year..Dawgs After Dark (that's not free) && plenty of other concerts geared toward the white community also...So if you want to choose where your money goes then vote.. Address the BSU, they are open to any ideas. Until then don't write articles about it after the fact. Use your free time to write a petition or the artists and activities that you do want to see.

Apparently, you're the ignorant one. Soulja Boy does sing about Liquor, weed, and honey buns...

Urban dictionary: Honeybun = One Hundred Million Dollars, thanks to Jay-Z.

With songs titled: Wit my Yums on, Turn my swag on, and shoppin spree...I think we all can conclude that Soulja boy sings about liquor, weed, and honeybuns.

So before you go shooting off your mouth about ignorance, you should consider that you have no idea what you are talking about.

Ignorance will always exist. That's not the problem here. The problem is that the Red and Black had no reason to print this on the front page. It seems as though the title of the article as well as the quote by the student were printed solely as an attempt to poke fun at African American stereotypes and encourage ignorance.

I may not necessarily agree with this line of thinking, but it's worth a venture:

We live in one of the most thriving college music scenes in America, yet I'll bet that less than half of our campus has experienced it. We're about an hour from Atlanta and tons of the big name acts that cut through there.

Which makes me venture to say...do we need the the Union to bring ANY artist to campus? Like, would people REALLY notice/care if no one came on to campus to play for us?

How in the world did the editor let this freshmen's comment be published within the paper? Not only did it make herself look ignorant, but it just made our school appear to live up to its racist standards that I hear from the Athens-Clarke County community everyday. Let's not forget, this concert doesn't only reach out to the students on campus, but to those in Athens as well. Hmm...the majority of people who live in Athens is African-American. Wow..and they are actually paying to come out to see T-Pain, Yung Joc, and now Soulja Boy. So UGA is making money! Isn't that a bonus!?!? I hear middle school kids excited about this man coming into town. But hey, if only those little kids knew that there was a girl (I wonder what her race is?) who thinks so low of him..which can lead to her whole perspective of black people. So this just goes to show you that maybe that's how the majority really thinks about the black community here at the University of Georgia - not worthy of anything.

The quote is ridiculous and Laura Whatley should be ashamed the rest of her time here at UGA for saying something so ignorant. I hope her parents read that.

The Red and Black should take better care of who writes and edits their stories - they are letting a whole lot of sh** through.

Moving beyond that though, someone go and keep tabs on who shows up to the concert tonight. There's probably going to be half, if not more, white students out there. Research shows that white, teenage boys are the main and majority consumers of rap anyways.

that's not totally true

It's funny how people can say it's not racist or what she said is not a stereotype. Until you sit in a classroom where every time they talk about the hood or the ghetto your entire class looks to you for a response because you are the only black person and I guess (dumb ass) logic tells them you lived there (when in actuality you HAVE NEVER LIVED IN THE HOOD/GHETTO in your entire life because you come from an upper middle class family) you cannot say what it is like to be in my shoes and therefore you cannot tell me how I feel.
Until you are the most uncomfortable person in the class every time the discussion of slavery or the civil rights movement comes up... SHUT UP!
It's not up to YOU to tell ME if something is racist or not. If I feel it is racist guess what... THAT IS THE WAY I FEEL.

I feel you on everything you said. I come from a all black high school and when I came here it was a total shock. Last year I got in a agruement w/ two white guys about HBCUs and Afrimative Action. I told those idiots that whites could go to black schools and they could teach there as well. I told them that every other school is a "HWCU" b/c at first only whites could attend. The said that Affirmative Action isn't fair cause there are whites who have higher gpas than blacks but get accepted here. I told them that affirmative action is the same as getting into Ivy League schools b/c of yo family's legacy (i.e George W. Bush)

It is sad that in this day and age there is still so much ignorance around.

I am so sick of the stereotypes. It's 2009 and it's sad to see that so many people still have the ignorant racist mindsets that existed many decades ago. I am appalled that the Red and Black would even publish such a racist comment. It's nice to know that all black people smoke weed and drink liquor. I wonder how Ms. Claire would feel if someone said that all white people were nothing more than poor white pieces of trash that smoked cigarettes.

And all of y'all think she's a racist? Please, somebody explain that because I guarantee if I put on a 10 gallon hat, some paint on jeans, boots, and country up my accent a little ya'll would think I'm a card carrying redneck. Sterotypes exist and we all prejudge people it's just a fact of life, but it's not racist to be suprised that someone who writes a WHOLE album about girls, liquor, weed and honeybuns and then doesn't request them at his concert. i think the more racist act is the fact that this article was published in the first place. why in the hell would the r&b publish an article that merely states that soulja boy likes chicken and fruit punch? what is the point?

Hot Wings and Hi-C. Is that not the MOST stereotypical thing he could ask for besides fresh watermelon?
